This will be a good test.

They have strenghened since we beat them at the RPS and are above us in the table, so i see us as underdogs with a good chance of causing an upset.

Remember St Albans? Lets bring our quality passing game Ashford!!!

CURFEWS 6 ASH TREES 5!

A bizarre match, definitely a game of two halves (6-2 down at half-time!), and the neutral's dream game.

Having nearly conceded after 20 seconds we scored first, Dan rising to head home an Ash corner in the 6th minute. Ed equalised for us in the 22nd with a wonderful 25 yarder from out right. Before Ed's goal we gifted Chertsey a penalty and a second goal through defenders trying to shepherd the ball out of touch and failing miserably. Maybe the moist pitch caught them out, but no excuse.

Kiri brought out a wonderful double-save from the Chertsey keeper, then came an eight-minute nightmare as Chersey showed Conference-style finishing and scored four more between the 30th and 38th, two from individual flashes of skill and yet another couple of goals handed to them on a plate by defensive errors. The errors were spread around at the back - I reckon only one of our back five didn't give a goal away through lack of concentration or awareness.

Having given Chertsey supporters their lottery numbers for the evening, they just needed one more for the bonus ball and, on that first half display, we braced ourselves and feared the worst. Whatever Burgo said at half-time worked almost like a dream.

The second half was one of the best displays of up-and-at-'em attacking football I've seen from an Ashford team. Jack scored our deserved third in the 56th, Jim scored in the 75th and in stoppage time Ash got our fifth. The lads pounded Chertsey to the point where they had a team who'd scored six arguing amongst themselves. Not only did the lads score three in the half, three more efforts were cleared off the line and their keeper made a vital save in the last minute.

The big difference today was that Chertsey's 'throw everything at it' defending was magnificent for both halves (it might not sound it by the scoreline, but the game really could have had 15-20 goals due to the attacking prowess of both teams), but our defending for the first half was appalling, and Burgo and Batts would have been seething.

Despite the result I came away from the game feeling positive. Well done to Dan, Ash and Ed who I thought were our best players today. I probably shouldn't say this, but I'm concerned that Kiri's become very feisty and argumentative in recent weeks - someone please calm him down a bit.

All in all, a wonderful fight back from the lads which deserved a replay - and after the first 45 minutes I would never have imagined i'd say that.

Glad you enjoyed the report on our own site, FB...

We are still involved in three Cup Competitions (four if you count the Aldershot Senior Cup) so there is still much to play with, in addition to the bread-and-butter of League action - which I agree remains the priority.

An interesting critique of the game's appeared via a thread on the Kempster forum...

...and Chertsey were rewarded with a trip to Brackley Town in the next round.

The report attached mentions Kiri in a slightly more favourable light than my recent email. Apologies for any hassle caused, I was just a bit concerned. As penance, if anyone can programme the 1960's hit 'Sukiyaki' onto the club karaoke machine I'll do a duet with Kiri - for those not in the know, 'Sukiyaki' is the only all-Japanese song to have made the British charts.

The Chairman and I went to watch Chertsey against Daventry last night.

Chertsey had a different keeper to the one who played against us but he looked quite nervous at times. They took the lead after ten minutes in a decent opening period but Daventry came into the game and the longer it went on the stronger they looked. Chertsey still managed to hit the woodwork at least twice but the final scoreline of 4-1 to the visitors emphasised their overall superiority on the night.

Lee Hendrie wasn't playing but his brother was and just as at Ashford, he stood out on occasions with his calm control and passing. Daventry don't exactly play pretty football but they seem to have recovered from their iffy start to the season and look a strong outfit to me.

There was only one caution on either side I think and the referee did OK but it was difficult sometimes to see exactly what he was awarding, esp the penalty for Daventry near the end and he did seem to spend rather too much time talking to players with over exaggerated arm movements.

Highly intrigued to discover that Chertsey Town owner / manager Spencer Day has resigned and is apparently on his way to Farnborough. Rumours that Neil Shipperley will take over at Chertsey and possibly sign up several of his old boys from Walton Casuals. Could be a few Curfews looking for new clubs, then.

Didn't realise that Spencer Day is actually Spencer Trethewy, the teenage tycoon who made a blaze of publicity (and the Wogan chat show) with his attempts to save Aldershot from extinction in 1990.
