HAYES & YEADING 1 HORNCHURCH 3

Hornchurch were missing four of their first team squad - Simon Glover, Joey May, Wayne Gray and Paul Goodacre. Hayes & Yeading were missing the majority of their supporters, who seem to have decided that regular trips to Woking, whilst their Yeading ground is being revamped, were not too popular.

The result was that the massive stand at the far end of the ground remained closed, and the away support appeared to be in the majority in the crowd of only 141.

In a first half dominated by Hornchurch, they started strongly, winning two corners inside the first two minutes, both taken by Andy Tomlinson, one of which was played short to Lewis Smith, whilst the other curved invitingly across the face of the goal.

With Tambeson Eyong already creating havoc on the right wing, and Lewis Smith causing consternation in the middle, it was no surprise when Tambeson combined with Lewis to set up the opening goal, with LEON McKENZIE calmly touching home Smith’s low cross from the right, after Eyong had opened up the defence.

And it could have been two just a minute later when Lewis Smith fired in a shot from outside the area which Brandon Hall did well to keep out of the net.

As Hornchurch kept up the pressure, Duran Reynolds came up for a corner, which Tomlinson sent to the far post, and Duran’s header went narrowly wide of the post.

The home side could not easily get the ball out of their half and a second goal soon followed, with Eyong again prominent, with a pass to FRANKIE CURLEY, who crashed his shot first time past the keeper and into the net.

As the home side became somewhat frustrated at chasing shadows, Daniel Wishart was booked for a badly mistimed challenge, and apart from two free kicks, both taken by John Goddard, they had little to offer – the first free kick sailed into the upper rows of the empty stand looming over the rest of the ground, and the second went wide of the goal.

Hornchurch kept up the pressure, and went close with two corners, one from Smith and the other from Tomlinson, the latter leading to a huge scramble in front of goal before the ball was eventually booted away.

Tambeson Eyong was then booked for a mistimed tackle, with the already booked Wishart getting himself involved before the referee quickly stepped in to clam things down.

The only threat posed by the home side came in the final minute of stoppage time, when Goddard’s corner curved goalwards, giving Joe Woolley his only save of the half.

If the first half was one sided, the same could not be said of the second half, as the home side began to control the midfield and force the pace. But it was Hornchurch who again almost found the net when Smith crossed to Eyong, whose first time shot cannoned off a defender to safety.

A Goddard corner followed, which Elliot Styles headed away, and for the next few minutes it was a Styles – Reynolds- Reiss Noel special, as they fielded a succession of home attacks.

Rimmel Daniel then went close at the other end from Smith’s centre. The ball was played back up field, and although Styles headed away, the ball was promptly played back from the half way line and out to the most dangerous home forward, right back Yassin Moutaouakil, who quickly sped along the right wing and fired the ball across into the goalmouth where TOBI JOSEPH glanced it into the net.

Hornchurch came back immediately, when Alex Bentley sent the ball along the right to Eyong, who left defenders trailing in his wake before crossing into the middle, where Calum Butcher was forced to concede a corner as Leon McKenzie moved in quickly.

Elliot Styles then opened up the home defence with a through pass to Lewis Smith who homed in on goal and ended up flat on the ground as he was about to shoot, the referee ignoring the loud appeals for a penalty.

Tambeson then conceded a free kick at the other end, and escaped with a lengthy lecture when it first appeared that a second yellow was about to follow.

Tambeson promptly gained possession when Styles headed the free kick away and went racing upfield, where his cross was cut out before it could reach the waiting McKenzie.

Duran Reynolds was then booked for a hand ball when Goddard tried to break through, but it was Reynolds who then sent a long ball out to the left for Rimmel Daniel, whose first time centre was well fielded by Brandon Hall, with McKenzie again waiting.

Michael Spencer then replaced Rimmel Daniel, whilst Tambeson Eyong was replaced by James Love as Hornchurch fell into a more defensive role, which was completed when Joe Tabiri came on for Lewis Smith.

But the earlier home threat had now diminished, and it was Hornchurch who again began to control the midfield – until the three minute board was held up, which signaled a last ditch attempt to grab the equalizer.

And two minutes into the stoppage time, the equalizer almost arrived, only for Joe Woolley to dive sideways to grab the ball, amidst a mass of both forwards and defenders.

And Woolley immediately pumped the ball deep upfield, where it found its way to Joe Tabiri, who calmly placed it ahead of LEON McKENZIE, who ran on, held off two challenges, and glided the ball into the net.

Three goals, three points. It could so easily have been two two. It could just have easily have been all over by the interval, such was Hornchurch’s first half dominance.
