I was walking through our local park this evening, when my attention was attracted by a fierce dispute over a corner kick by a group of 10 year olds playing football. The corner was finally taken into the goal area, a neat stepover by one youngster and a sharp shot, which was well caught by the goalie. As the the players dispersed for the kick, I realised that they were all young girls.... Looking across to the Council-provided ball court, I saw why they were not playing in there - it was occupied by a group of young lads playing netba.....sorry, basket ball!

Basketball isn't the curse you think it might be. I'm not that into it myself, and I don't see it taking over the country, if you are afraid it will.

Football (or soccer as it is called here) is getting bigger and bigger all the time here. I love the idea of kids trying new sports instead of playing the same one generation after generation.

When in Dorking on a Sunday, check with me and I'll tell you if the Dorking Girls are at home at Meadowbank or not.

I think we have a friendly this Sunday.
