Cockfosters 2 - Hanwell Town 0

A really well deserved and overdue 3 points yesterday for Neil Ewing's team at the Lane, nice to see the lads in such high spirit, good game to watch, well done lads !!!!

From Out Of Nowhere.......

With a healthy 39 points as opposed to our 13 our visitors could be excused for thinking that they only needed to turn up for an easy three points. Footie however is not like that and Hanwell were in for a rude awakening as we put in one of our more gutsy performances of the season. The side at present has the nucleus of a promising outfit based on a mixture of wise old heads and the long awaited breakthrough of some of our star academy lads making it into the first team. Hanwell throughout the entire 90 mins looked to be a very jaded lot and in comparison we were the side that played like a top half team. On ten minutes a touch of high class professionalism played out on our very modest Dacre field patch led to us taking the lead. A very astute Aaron Ewing standing over the ball for a free kick just outside the box asked the question to the referee if he could have a go at goal and no sooner had the nod been given the ball was nestling in the back of the net whilst keeper Hussein was still wall building. A brilliant strike from Aaron but equally brilliant was his knowledge of the game to take advantage of a Hanwell defence caught with their pants down. Our main spearhead of Matt Kearney and Danny Curbelo seemed to be up for it right from the start with blood and thunder guts Curbelo in particular scrapping for anything that resembled a football. Kearney on the other hand showed his class as a clever player at holding the ball up and brought back memories of the Penfold days. Curbelo was unlucky with a deft header that just looped over the bar and he swiftly followed it up with another smacking header that met up with remarkable resistance from the acrobatic Hussein. Similar to our first goal that seemingly came from out of nowhere our second on 28 mins carried the same trade mark as Dan the Man strolled across the left side of the box with not a hint of menace about him until he let fly at goal delivering a gem of a cross shot that beat his adversary Hussein all ends up. Earlier in the week match commentators drooled over the way Man United's Welbeck dispatched a similar ball into the net but if anything the Curbelo version was better. Two nil up at the break and a very encouraging display at the back showing no hint of our 70 goal blues. The second half was a bit quieter for us on the attack front with our best chance falling to Ewiing who wildly wellied a Curbelo set up into the Compton end oak tree. What attacks Hanwell did muster up were either quelled by our well drilled backline or dealt with superbly by our number one Daley. All in all a very promising display against a side who were no pushover but on the day made to look very ordinary indeed. Rakim Richards has proved that he can have a red shirt for as long as he wants and oozes quality as does the tireless Joe Smith who had a busy day bombing down the right. Captain Casey had a great game in the middle of the park and until he was injured Nick Martin looked the business wherever he roamed
