Anger at Ware FC

By Alasdair Gold

WARE Football Club fans have vented their fury as it appears Paul Halsey will helm his last game tomorrow as manager of the club with Broxbourne Borough V&E boss Tony Faulkner expected to take over.

Halsey was a popular choice when he took over from Dennis Greene earlier this year and despite a string of defeats this season which have left Ware in the bottom two, performances have been solid and improving with only single goals deciding matches. Tuesday’s night 2-1 win at Romford appeared to have bought the former goalkeeping coach more time.

However, the under-pressure manager has been repeatedly criticised by chairman Aiden Mynott in a series of recent programme notes and new vice-chairman Simon Morgan could not guarantee Halsey’s future when he came on board this week.

Although the club is yet to confirm the news, it appears Halsey will manage the team for the last time against Thamesmead Town tomorrow, with Faulkner, who has enjoyed success with his free-scoring Broxbourne side in recent seasons, believed to be taking over next week.

The Ware Independent Supporters’ Club issued a statement to the Mercury on Friday revealing their anger at the events.

“It has come to our attention that the first team manager of Ware FC, Paul Halsey, has been sacked by the board. It would also appear that he has been replaced with immediate effect by Tony Faulkner, previously manager at Broxbourne Borough V&E,” the statement read.

“We do not wish to see our club residing in the relegation places of the league. Recent performances and results gave us the belief that Paul Halsey and the current squad would survive from relegation and therefore we continued to back the manager as we have done since the day of his appointment. Paul is a Ware man through and through and his passion and honest motives are something we have been impressed by.

“WISC was like to point out that it has nothing against Tony Faulkner. We do however have a problem with the board over these recent actions. We would like a full statement from Ware FC explaining their reasons for dismissal of Paul Halsey and also a timeline of how the events unfolded.”

For all the news and reaction on the managerial changes at Ware, read this Friday’s Mercury.

It looks as if Tony Faulkner is going to fall flat on his face at Ware before too long with 'financial pressures' in the offing:

& in what way do you make that assessment. If a Manager has to manage a budget sensibly, then that's a good thing. Just because he has been upfront about the financial situation doesn't mean to say he will 'Balls up' !

I bet Broxbourne weren't big payers, yet Tony Faulkner did a great job there. Stop being such a dick & post something positive & informative for once.

Horace - Tony Faulkner walked out on Broxbourne Borough, taking players with him, just when the Goffs Lane Club were ready to knock on the door of the Ryman League and, with all due respect to him, had to start from square one with a blank sheet of paper under Mark Beels!

This extract from a local press article is a good example of Tony Faulkner constantly poaching players from Broxbourne Borough:

WARE have signed 16 players ahead of their home pre-season friendly against Wycombe Wanderers.

Among the players returning from the last campaign are Dan Roles, Luke Marshall, Matthew Mitchell and Sam Ruff.

Despite interest from a number of Blue Square Bet South clubs, boss Tony Faulkner has held on to defender Matt Turpin.

Lewis Donovan has signed, having made a handful of appearances last term, while the club’s new goalkeeper is Obey Murefu, who has joined from Faulkner's previous club Broxbourne Borough.

Also signed are Jamie Petts, Reece Wilson, Luke Pope, Davy Hunt, Daniel O'Connor, Ricardo Allured, Lee Samways, Tom Whitbread and Vincent Rispoli.

The month of July is "open season" for signing non-contract players! Most managers tend to stick with their known bunch of lads, so it's no surprise that a player like former Zimbabwe international 'keeper Murefu has joined him. His replacement Mark Virgo is a very good 'keeper at this level so won't make a lot of difference! A big name missing from Ware's list is Ryan Wade - where has he gone this season?
