Question for our FF refs....

I was asked a question the other day and was a bit quizzed. If say the left back was a brilliant penalty stopper could he take the keepers position for a penalty then swap back straight after as soon as the ball went "dead". What would happen regarding names versus shirt numbers on the team sheet and how many other times could it happen.

Also if not how is it that other players can swap positions at anytime and that keepers can become an outfield player whenever they feel that they want to ie..... up for corners etc etc.

Basically, yes, as long as the ref is informed at both times and the shirts are swapped before and after.

going back to my reffin days Weebs, perfectly acceptable. I've actually done this in reverse, I was playing in goal as we had no keeper against Coney Halls Sunday side in a cup quarter final. I was our penalty taker and with the score at 1-1 with ten to go we got a pen. Now only ever having missed one pen up to then I was confident, but just in case I swapped with our right back so if I did miss I wouldn't be caught struggling to get back if they broke quickly, needn't have worried though snashed it in for 2-1. Then swapped shirts went back in goal and conceded two in the last ten minutes !!!!! Gutted or what !!!!!!!!!!! ha ha meeemoriessss

As has been mentioned, the keeper can swap with another player as long as the referee is informed. That's stipulated in the Laws. It's a special case because (obviously) the keeper has special privileges compared to other players on the field of play. Note that if the referee is not informed, the players involved will be cautioned.

There is no limit as to how many times this swap can happen.

My youth team manager use to do this with our team. Wonder if he does it with the Spurs academy now?!
