Ryman League - Hayes 1 Hornchurch 1

With Canvey Island breaking away at the top neither side could afford to drop points in this match. The wet and windy conditions failed to dampen the spirits of the home side and arguably they looked the better side for much of the game.

After 14 minutes Danny Gay dropped a far post free kick but must have been relieved when the resulting goalbound effort was cleared from within the 6 yard area. Hayes made an early substitution a minute later when Stuart Goodall came on for Kevin Cleary and it was Goodall who 10 minutes later started a good move on the half way line and finished it off with a shot from an acute angle under challenge from Danny Kerrigan to put the home side in front. Maybe George Borg was hoping for a similar impact when John Keeling replaced Lloyd Opara in the 35th minute but it was Adam Locke who shot narrowly wide two minutes later. Two minutes after that a good run and shot from Gavin McGowan was pushed round the post by keeper Jake Cole. Hayes had the final chance of the half though when Gay made a good save from a low drive from Kevin Warner.

Warner curled a free kick wide 13 minutes into the second half and Andrew Martin replaced Adam Locke just over ten minutes later. Our team performance improved noticeably and it was following an Andrew Martin free kick 20 yards out that Hayes defender Rob Bixby handled in the area. The referee pointed to the spot and Vinnie John equalised with confidence. Three minutes later John had a great chance to put us in front when a John Keeling cross from the right was helped on at the near post and found John at the far post who got his foot to the ball under pressure from a defender but poked the ball over the bar.

Line-up:- Gay, Gooding, Kerrigan, Adedeji, Matthews, Locke (A Martin 70), Graham, McGowan, John, Opara (Keeling 35), Allen. Subs not used:- Southon, Cowley, Collier (GK).

Nice one Rob, in actual fact we should have had a pen just before the ref pointed to the spot.

The one he gave, although ball to hand, enabled the defender to gain possession, a definite in my view and right in front of me.

Their move for the goal was started by a rolling ball from a free kick, but we still was half asleep.

Full credit to Hayes for their non stop harrowing and also hospitality.

Roll on Arlesey.

Anyone watched Rob's video of our penalty yet?

Cracked me up, listening to the Hayes supporters.

When our lot called out for "hand ball" you can distinctly hear someone shout out "Rubbish", and then another younger voice call out "Well done ref", just at the point when their player does the same on the left-hand side of the box.

Comic timimg!
