Jets 4 Colney 3

A largely scrappy game which the home side made very heavy weather of, ultimately securing the points thanks to 2 subs midway through the second half which changed the game totally in our favour.

Jets had been 2 up and cruising before a needless penalty giveaway by Mass Barradas gifted the visitors a goal just before half time, and two in as many minutes around the hour mark turned the game on its head. Bringing on Kristian Swaby up front and Onome Emevon at the back swung the game decisively in Jets favour, but it was a lot harder than it should have been against a young Colney side only put together this week from what I understand after the previous first team followed Jack Metcalfe out the door.

The visitors deserve great credit for how they played, and of course we know exactly what it's like to lose an entire team mid season as we were in the same boat earlier in this campaign. The two sides meet again on Tuesday in the Premier Cup, this time under the glowsticks at Cotlandswick. Bring a torch because there will be goals to see.

Division One
Stotfold 1 Winslow United 0

A groundhopper from another Forum was present, what an attendance:

Spartan South Midlands League Division 1
Stotfold 1 Winslow United 0
Admission: £6, Programme: £1
Attendance: 533 (official)

Stotfold had the better of a first half of few chances and really should have taken the lead in the 33rd minute when Luke Smith hit a side-footed shot over the bar from close range after being found unmarked from a cross. Very little else of note happened in the first half, the only other shots coming from tame free kicks that were easily saved by both keepers.
The second half wasn't much better than the first, but it was Winslow who started to find themselves on top as the half progressed. In the 73rd minute, they had their best chance to take the lead as a backheeled pass from their 7 set their 10 through on goal to have a powerful shot saved and held by Stotfold keeper Liam Gooch. The only goal eventually came Stotfold's way two minutes into stoppage time when a clever pass from midfield gave new signing James Younger (he joined from Langford just 24 hours before this match). the space to hit a shot into the back of the net from the edge of the box
This was definitely one of the worst matches I've attended this season, partially because of the wind causing problems but also because the two defences mostly held firm and gave away very few chances. This tends to be why I don't watch many of these "1st vs 2nd" matches because they usually end up as boring slogs where both teams are more concerned with not losing than with trying to actually win. Stotfold had the better of the first half with the wind behind their backs and Winslow had the better of the second for the same reason. A draw would have probably been a fair result but a win for Stotfold strengthens their position at top spot.
Stotfold's new ground is decent enough, very spacious and with facilities better than Step 6 level and not just the usual 50-seater Arena stand. The range of food on offer from outside the clubhouse is more interesting and mixed than the usual football fare, with mini pizzas, scampi, chicken nuggets and toasties on offer alongside the usual burgers.

Division Two
Old Bradwell United 1 Eynesbury United 1

Eynesbury United's version of events at Abbey Road:

Old Bradwell Utd (1) 1. Eynesbury Utd (0) 1
United put in a battling performance to come away with a point from the top three clash with Old Bradwell.
However they have Evan Jeckells to thank for the point after he made a string of great saves in the first half, without him Old Bradwell would have been clear and out of site at half time.
In a blustery afternoon Old Bradwell dominated the first 45 minutes, but only have themselves to blame for not putting the game to bed before half time. The first action for Jeckells saw him save well from Valentine, however within minutes Old Bradwell took the lead when good play on their right saw the ball travel to the far post where Daryl Smith was on hand to turn the ball into the net. It was Smith who moments later hit a free kick from all of 35 yards only for Jeckells to push the ball on to the bar. Pursey was the next to have a great chance but shot wide. Valentines shot was then saved superbly by Jeckells, and when Smith saw his shot turned over the bar, Old Bradwell were probably wondering what they had to do to beat the Bulls keeper. On 37 minutes a great corner was swung in from the OB right, the ball was bundled into the United net, but the referee awarded a free kick for a foul on Scotney.
United managed to get to half time just one down, and the management changed the shape and brought Ryan Baxter on. With the wind at their backs United started to get into the game and chances started to come. Firstly Sole had a shot that went wide and Fox tested the keeper from 25 yards. On 58 minutes Baxter made a good run into the OB half, he played the ball back to McLean whose cross found Piesse who headed home. Fortunate yes, but United had riden their luck and were now level. The game was now end to end. Baxter drove in from the United right and curled a shot over the keeper but the ball struck the bar and went over.
Bradwell kept pushing with the dangerous Smith leading the United defence a merry dance, but OB continued to squander chances. And in the last two minutes United nearly nicked the three points when an Owen Dixon free kick just went wide with the keeper routed to the floor.
Somehow United had managed to get a point and maybe just deserved but it was a good game played in great spirit by both teams. Man of the match was the United keeper, kept us in the game and title race.

Division One
Raunds Town 2 Ampthill Town 3

A groundhopper from another Forum was present at Kiln Park

Raunds Town (Red/Black) 2-3 Ampthill Town (Yellow/Blue) at Kiln Park.
South Midlands League D1.
Admission £5 inc free basic programme, badge £3. Att circa 35.
Raunds 1' 20'.
Ampthill 36p' 53' 83'.
On a very windy day the 4th placed visitors ground out three points against lowly hosts Raunds. The weather conditions rather spoilt the quality of the football but it didn't stop Raunds taking the lead virtually from kick off, then adding a second shortly after. A good 'mob'  up from Ampthill sounded decidedly unhappy. However a penalty before the break a second shortly after and a winner blown direct in from a corner with ten minutes to play finally edged them ahead. Only one ground left for me to complete the top two divisions of the South Midlands League.
One amusing incident. As the young home keeper Sonny Jasper was retrieving the ball he saw my hat asked if I was a Palace fan, and on my confirmation he said he was also and asked how we were doing at Brentford, I was happy to confirm the game scoreless. On my way into Raunds I saw a car with a huge Palace badge in the back window. Obviously Northamptonshire is a Palace hotbed!
