Women Get Life for Human Torch Murder

Dead: Debra Carne

Two women have been jailed for life for their part in the murder of a teenage girl who was doused in petrol and set alight after becoming embroiled in a row over a boyfriend.

Kerry Bauer, 21, of Braintree, Essex, was jailed for a minimum of 17 years after being found guilty of the murder of Debra Carne, 17, whose burnt body was discovered in an isolated lay-by near her home in Sible Hedingham, Essex, on July 28, 2002.

Emma Last, 19, also of Braintree, earlier pleaded guilty to murder and was told she would have to spend at least 20 years in jail for taking the lead role in the killing.

Jailed: Kerry Bauer

Steven Wood, 23, of Halstead, Essex, was jailed for eight years after being cleared of murder but was found guilty of manslaughter on April 14 for his part in the killing following a six-week trial at Chelmsford Crown Court.

And Nicole Hollinshead, 19, of Halstead, was jailed for five years after being found guilty of conspiracy to inflict grievous bodily harm.

Sentencing the four, Mr Justice Nelson described the death of Miss Carne as horrific and said the motive for the killing was on the face of it so trivial it defied explanation.

Life term: Emma Last

"For teenagers and people in their twenties to have lovers' quarrels is entirely common but for such quarrels to result in murder is thankfully extremely uncommon," he said.

"Each of you was drawn into a plan to kill a 17-year-old girl who had done nothing more than become the temporary subject of Steven Wood's affections. He thought he had found a more sympathetic girlfriend.

"Whether it was a lethal cocktail of personality or powerful emotions driven by alcohol and cannabis or a failure to distinguish between fantasy and reality, cannot now be determined."

During the trial, the jury of seven men and five women heard that Wood had lured Miss Carne to the lay-by where Bauer and Last were waiting to ambush her.

Plot: Nicole Hollinshead

The four had hatched a plot to get revenge on Miss Carne after Hollinshead became jealous of her relationship with Wood.

Prosecutor Martyn Levett told the court that Wood and Hollinshead had been living together but separated after a "tiff'' shortly before Miss Carne's death.

A few days before the death, Wood had spent the night at the home Miss Carne shared with her mother, Heather Knight.

Guilty: Steven Wood

A day later, Wood and Hollinshead got back together and visited Bauer and Last at a hostel where they were staying in Braintree.

Miss Carne called Hollinshead to say Wood had made advances to her. When challenged by Hollinshead, Wood denied this.

Hollinshead became angry with Miss Carne and recruited Bauer and Last in a plot to wreak revenge on her love rival.

Wood filled an empty litre bottle of Sunny Delight drink with petrol at a garage before calling Miss Carne to lure her to the lay-by where Bauer and Last were lying in wait.

Hollinshead waited at the hostel to provide the other three with alibis, Mr Levett said.

Mr Levett said in police interviews that Bauer said she had thrown petrol over Miss Carne and that Last had set her alight, singing Relight My Fire and Burn Baby Burn as she did so.

After the killing, the three drove back to Braintree to meet up with Hollinshead.

The court heard that other people at the hostel had overheard them planning the killing.

Once again the British legal system shows itself up. Why has the judge given minimum recommended sentences? These people were guilty of pre-medidated murder. as far as I am concerned they have been sentenced to life and should serve life.
