LIBRO

in brief

libraries cost taxpayers 1 bill stg a year

staff refuse to open em whem people can use them sunday late evenings etc

due to a bloated bureaucracy books that cost a tenner in the shops cost 24 quid of taxpayers dough to out in a library

they are slowly turning into internet cafes

funding up 39 per cent over ten years visitor numbers down 20 per cent

since 1984 the number of visitors has halved

chances of finding the book u want now are down to 1 in 2

staff costs make up 50 per cent of the bill but none of this is spent open libraries at more useful times

the last paragraph is the best..

the report said that £100 million is wasted on unnecessary administration and another £100 million on 'over elaborate' management, inappropriate staff deployment, outmoded practices and aged systems replicated in 200 library authorities

"Hundreds of thousands of readers have turned their backs on public libraries because thay cannot find the books they need there."

....costs £1billion a year to run [overpaid trainees, perhaps?]......spend less than one tenth of that on books....staff refuse to open at lunchtimes or weekends....according to the charity Libri [remarkable co-incidence that]...... etc...etc...

"The Report said that over £100 millionis wasted on unnecessary administration and another £100 million on over elaborate management, inappropriate staff deploymant outmaded practices and aged systems replicated in 200 library authorities and a chap called Libro's training grant."

[i made the last 7 words up, but the rest is the gist of it.]

Proves Laz EFM and Zeals don't do a lot of reading !

I read on average, 4 books a week, and as most good books are £20 plus each, that would put it outside my income bracket !

Besides, my library has a pretty good selection of C.D's, but we won't mention Nero Express !

its not the concept of 'the library' thats in question.. its the fact that they spunk all our money out the window and shut during the most convienient hours for people to use them..

im with Laz get your own library the main attraction being those ladders on wheels that you can fk around on for hours whilst trying to locate your porn collection

When I was at college (Oaklands) they closed the only libary on campus and turned it into a massive administration block for the people that worked there. They threw most of the books out and gave us a small room the size of a cupboard where the content of books range wasn't exactly great! I mean a college without a libary? It's a bit daft!

Just goes to show how beuracracy can choke a system and ruin things. I remember one of my teachers saying they weren't allowed to keep their staplers, they had to go down to this block, ask for one, sign it out and sign it back in when they'd finished with it!

That's no realtion to this thread but whenever I think about what happened at college, how beuracracy took over, it makes me fecking angry and I go off on one!

If you want to read a book - FKING BUY ONE.

These days you can buy a book, read it and then take it back to the shop. If you like it photocopy it on your works copier!

That's nothing to us St.Albans folk. I don't even read but spend at least £100 a week on books just to take them straight to the charity shops of Hatfield and Essex, helping the poor!
If it's £20 for a good book and you can't afford it then start reading bad books!

As for the other warblings - The reason there is no libary in Markyate is simple. now we may waste a load of cash in this country but even the wasteful government can see that giving something educational to an area where education is never going to work is silly. It would be like Gucci opening a shop in Moss Side!

There is a library in Cell Barnes Lane as well.

The college is very cleverly being taken apart bit by bit so we can build more expensive flats for investment bankers to sleep in during the week
