A comfortable win for us at rather blustery Southend yesterday. The conditions(and pitch)didn't make for great footy but we were always in total control and the result was never in doubt. Hockers from two set pieces, free kick bent round the wall in the first half and a penalty given for handball in the second. Sandwiched between was a debut goal for Bertie Brayley walking it in after his initial effort had been parried by the Manor keeper. Manor didn't manage a meaningful attempt on target in the 90 minutes.

McSweeney Sappleton Trott Henty

Cousins Hunter Forbes Dormer (Heeroo)

Brayley Hockton (Wareham)

snu: Gallagher, Allen, Kerrigan

Ultimately very comfortable, achieved everything we needed to:

1) Won (obviously the most important thing)

2) Got a goal from a striker other than Hockers

3) Rested 2 key players - Dorms and Hockers both got taken off in the 2nd half

A fierce wind and bobbley pitch made for an unmemorable game in terms of quality football, but Manor never once looked likely to score. First half playing into the wind Town had the bulk of the possession and took the lead when Hockton smashed home a free kick. Second half Brayley capitalised on some slack defending to score on his debut with a smart finish then Hockton completed the scoring from the spot.

Team

Gothard, Mcsweeney, Henty, Trott, Sappleton, Dormer (Heeroo), Forbes, Hunter, Brayley, Hockton (Wareham), Cousins

2 Changes from Tuesday, Stowe had a bout of Toncillitis and Game has an ankle injury.

A work man like performance really. Nothing spectacular but that isn't a bad thing and in a way just shows the quality of the team. We didn't have to go up a gear to beat 'em, just brushed 'em aside.

Enough has been said about the wind (with the exception of the "belch brothers", standing next to me, who added to that particular weather condition - inside and out) and the condition of the pitch.

Man of the match for me was Leon Hunter. I could've plumded for Gary Henty but his performances all season have so far been excellent and he has been getting forward a lot more recently but Leon put himself about very well and shades it for me.

As it was such a work man like performance, with loads of effort being kept in the locker, I say, bring on who ever. We'll just step up a notch and brush them aside.

The above posts have summed up the game very well - we were never in any trouble at the back. we kept another clean sheet (3 in 5 for paul gothard), and it looks as if the back 5 are very settled and dont look as if they will leak many goals this season. up-front hockers did the damage once more but it was nice to see brayley get on the scoresheet on his debut (the only forward other than hockers to score a goal this season).

overall we did enough to win the game and really we never had to exert ourselves. southend manor had a very good player at the back (they're no. 5) but other than him looked pretty much as you would expect from an essex senior league team.

just praying for a decent draw in the next round (preferably at home) but knowing our luck we will be drawn against leyton away!

who do we want in the next round then??.... we will soon find out
