Explorer cannot keep me logged in to this site

Recommended Posts

I am having problems logging in - seemingly only when I attempt to do so with Explorer (the latest edition - is that 6.0 or maybe 7.0 ?). This problem is not associated with any update to Explorer - it just came on last week.

I can initially log in OK, but as soon as I try to bring up a second page, I find that I have automatically logged out.

Help ! Please.

Could be a cookie problem. Try clearing the cookie. An Internet Explorer user may have to tell you how to do this -- I use Mozilla as my browser -- but it should be somewhere in the Options within the Tools menu (if my memory serves me well). Then when you log back in you will have a better chance of staying logged in.

The only other remedy I can think of is to change your browser. You could always try Firefox. Just make sure you download the English version for your operating system (which I am assuming is Windows although IE is available MacOS and OSX as well).

I have lost all the unread markers - the red numbers which show how many postings are new. I went to the eye with the stop sign and allowed cookies with FAns Focus but nothing happens, it still blocks it. Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong. I also lowered the protection level on the slider to low, but still no difference.

We will soon be switching software, so a lot of these problems will go away <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

So, how different is the new software going to be? I only ask because I am well aware that there are various "off the shelf" forum software packages about (which you can then hack and customise to your heart's content) but they mostly appear to be very similar (usually PHP although I have seen ASP as well, usually MySQL but sometimes other database systems though even those are usually different flavours of SQL). Does this mean you have identified what is causing the problems? If not, then they could rear their ugly heads all over again through no fault of yours.

BTW, I have just loaded SuSE 10 Linux on my laptop, which allows me to use the modem (getting a driver for the AC'97 modem chipset appears to have been a major problem in Linux in the past) so I can now view these pages in both that and Mandrake 10.1, which I have on my desktop machine. SuSE 10 appears to be much quicker at loading the pages (and can see other sites which I always had problems with in Mandrake). This makes me wonder whether the Windows users are having problems caused by software conflicts based on the operating system and whether it has had any patches applied (and, if so, which ones). Especially as there was always such a big difference "under the bonnet", so to speak, between NT/XP and 95/98/ME which had a completely different kernel.
