Bromley 1-0 Billericay

Another frustrating afternoon...

Defended poorly and conceded a soft goal early doors. Battled back into the game, hit woodwork twice late on, Hockers missed 5 chances of varying degrees of difficulty. Had a nailed on pen turned down late on when their defender stuck out a hand to deflect a cross from Bourne into the keepers hands. Their keeper then lucky to stay on pitch when he charged out of the box to scythe down Elder - if there was any difference between that and Mel's sending off against Maldon, I couldn't see it. Leon stretchered off after a studs up challenge from one of their midfielders - only booked - apparently no broken leg but a nasty lump on his shin and he's on crutches.

We started slowly and unfortunately gave away another bad goal but as the game went on we got stronger and stronger and we def deserved something from the game. We were unlucky to hit the underside of the bar (nathan) and the inside of the post (tom) and see neither end up in the back of the net.

I am normally loathe to join in slating of referees as the bad ones tend to easily outnumber the good ones but this guy took the piss. A shocking assault on Leon that saw him carried off - only a yellow. the ref then misses a clear handball and also fails to send off their tosspot keeper who scythed down nathan when clearly last man, instead deciding to make the slightly easier call and send off Justin for pointing out his catalogue of blunders.

I do think we can take some positives from the game especially our play going forwards. A good debut from Warren and George Lay put in his best performance for ages - he needs to produce that consistently for us.

Not sure whether we need Tuesday or not right now, maybe Jack Frost will have his say. But its another game I have come away from thinking that we should have got more from it.

The Officials performance yesterday was summed for me when their paperwork stated that Dale Brightly had been booked.

That said, good or bad, we need the ref's, and I have respect for each and everyone of them for walking out each Saturday officiating games knowing they will probably be bombarded with a torrent of abuse from at least one set of fans.

I thought it was an even game for 75 or so min's with both teams having chances. The final 15 saw us dominate and I thought we were very unlucky not to score, another day an all that.

From a team perspective, I was pleased with the performance and effort yesterday.

Well done lad’s <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/applaus.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/applaus.gif" alt="" />

I have read Gaza’s link to the Bromley report, and I guess if I was a Bromley Fan, I would have a similar point of view.

But I'm not, so here's how I saw the Nathan Incident.

Nathan did NOT dive, he was clean through and travelling at speed towards the goal, NOT away from it. The keeper came out and clearly failed him, it was outside the box.

The reason Nathan ended up way inside the box was

1. His speed and momentum carried him forward

2. He made a little jump in order to protect himself from the definite fail. Had he left his feet planted, he could well have been badly injured.

And, because he was travelling towards the goal, keeps was clearly last man.

Ball to hand is harsh, but hand to ball is a penalty.

I thought it looked suspiciously inside. It was the linesman who called it as outside the area and he had a clear view on it. No way did Elder dive and I can only think that because the ball travelled away from the goal, the keeper was spared a red-card. Prior to that though, we only have ourselves to blame for failing to put chances away. How Hunter and Elder missed those sitters though, god only knows! Do we know how long Hunter will be out for?

Things like the penalty decisions tend to even themselves up over the season - we've had a few go our way this season already.

The thing that annoys me is that Macca (bodychecked v Wealdstone), Dorms (boot to the knee v Hendon), Rossy (late tackle v Heybridge) and now Leon (studs up challenge v Bromley) have all been injured as a result of foul challenges. Now I'm not suggesting that all the challenges were malicious, the ones that did for Dorms and Ross were clumsy and Macca was unfotunate in that he landed awkwardly but if you include the two footed lunge at nathan v Heybridge that's almost 1/2 a team!

I think I'm right in saying that only 2 bookings accrued to the offending players as a consequence - which hardly seems fair given that Bourne got the same punishment for no more than putting the ball in the net seconds after the ref had whistled (v Heybridge).

Well, I was absolutely level with the 18 yard line and contact was 100% INSIDE the box ! To be fair to the ref and linesman these things happen so fast and they are bound to get the odd thing wrong - there are no Sky 16 angle replays here and they are not Premiership standard after all. I will lean towards TC's opinion on Nathan and not suggest for a moment that he dived, but certainly to the home or even neutral observer it may have appeared that way and my immediate thought was "is he going to give the penalty or book Nathan?" - having blown the whistle for the foul, it HAD to be a pen, the question of whether it was in or out the box did not cross my mind, so clear was the point of contact. Something else worth mentioning in defence of the officials though,is that you get such a better view of the lines from up in a stand or on a raised terrace, hopefully the ref and his linesmen can see just as well from being actually on the pitch! But at Heybridge last week in particular I found it very difficult to judge where the goal line, penalty box and far touchlines were standing at ground level, just behind the assistant. And if Nathan had kept his feet, he had a simple tap in from my position too, so surely it was a "clear goalscoring opprtunity denied" and a straight red for the keeper ? Oh well, whats done's done - its late and I'm rambling, just thought I'd share my observations from the perfect view of the "incident"...

If we could have played like we did in the last 10-15mins we could have got something out of this without having to dwell on bad calls by the ref. Cant understant why dale was electing to punch everything that came near him. Im a big believer that if you can punch it with two hands then you have the capability to catch it with two hands. Its not nice to point the blmae for a goal but keeper error has cost us in the last two games and in general this season has been a week area for us.

I thought kerrigan had a good game, infact he has been by far our most consistant player this season.

I dont think Bromley would have been upset had we taken a point from this, its just a shame we came away empty handed as a lot of the teams above us lost on saturday.

Looking at the table, we're still 6 points off the pack and with some players injured but some of our other players now being thrown into the fray and being asked to step up, it should be interesting.

This gives a golden opportunity for our youth players to start showing what they can do as far as laying a foundation for the club to start moving up the league. George Lay started to do that last Saturday...

If our youth / fringe players start to perform, then it'll be a competition as to who plays when our recognised first teamers come back within the next 3 to 4 weeks. This in itself should make us a more competative team.

So, it's still all to play for as far as I can see.

good to hear george playing well.

I think George put in the best 20 minutes performance I have seen since we got him. Oh hang on, he played quite well against Slough.

In my opinion, he is a developing player and is still quite young. I would like to see him have a little more freedom to do what he does but that would mean freeing him up from the defensive duties that our wingers are asked to do. Bit like stealing from Paul to pay Peter...

I know he isn't some peoples favorite at the moment but I think he will come on...he has a lot to learn...The same applies to Simmo. A great dead ball player but a little "raw"...he'll come on as well. Against Wealdstone, I thought he was on his game and certainly the pick of our players.

With our string of misfortunes as injuries go, it's down to these players to step up to the "mark" and start showing some "gain" from the "invested" time that coaching team has given them. Taking that on board, remember, we're in the Ryman League and it's a tough old league this season with the experience being shown in the other teams.

We have to be a little patient at the mo, circumstances beyond our control (injuries) are picking the starting 11 at the mo. We'll have all those players back in four weeks time (approx) and if the young guys do the business, then it's going to be (even more) exciting times at New Lodge, what with the competition for places.

As I said, we're 6 points off the pace and the play offs still don't look unatainable...then again, Hampton lost this Saturday and some of the front runners have only got to start having an indifferent run of results and it all changes...Still a long way to go.

"Still a long way to go".

You can say that again Gazza. The bit about injuries is a bit irrelevent, I think you'll find most sides have an injury list at this time of the season. On saturday Braintree had Griffiths, Revell and Riddle out. Many consider them to be Iron's first choice attack yet the team that played still hit three. You need cover in this game, if you don't have it you can expect to have some problems.

We have a toughie at Leyton tonight, IC you have W&E who are struggling, so do you forecast 5-0 as per normal?

Enjoy the evening.
