TOP CD's For January 2006

The music year has taken off with quite a bang really.

So, what is in, what is out, what have I played and what have I bought.

My recomended purchases are

Strokes "First Impressions Of Earth" - Not as garage as their last offerings. Quite conservative rock actually and well executed (which may be the reason that some critics have panned it)

Talking Heads re issues - The pick of the bunch being "77" with "Pshyco Killer"...may get this on the disc for the next home game.

Artic Monkeys "Whatever People Say I Am, I'm Not" - top album of 2006 so far althought I'd disagree with NME readers that put it in at No.5 of the all time top British album.

Ordinary Boys "Brassbound" - Okay, released last year but I've only just picked up on it. Great album

Ryan Adams "Heartbreaker" - The Alt. Country masterpiece. Released....well not this year but a top album and one I've been playing a couple of weeks (much to the missus horror - said it was depressing)

Various Artists Soundtrack To "Pretty Women" - Expanded with some classic 80's cheese. Nowt like a bit of "cheese" with yer main course.

Status Quo "Ain't Complainin'" re issue - Okay, okay, the masters of the three chord shuffle but this one is better than I remembered it and there is nowt like a bit of Quo boogie for some fun filled, light hearted air guitaring...And I am a lover of '70's rock.

The Kooks "Inside In, Inside Out" - Brit rock with harmonies. Not recieved the greatest of reviews but I like and would recomend.

The Blue Areoplanes "Swagger" - Another re issue and an album I missed first time round. Quirky but a great pop album.

Crosby, Stills & Nash "CSN" (first album) - Another re issue with extra tracks. I love this band and always will. Possibly the best vocal harmony group ever (with the exception of The Beatles). Includes "Everybody's Talkin'" (The Harry Nillson / Beautiful South hit) as an out take bonus track...Oh and "Suite; Judy Blue Eyes" (which is the dogs).

That is about it....

Wot, the absolutly fine and dandy Whitesnake "Live In The Still Of The Night" DVD recorded in 2004 at the Hammersmith Apollo that rocks like a bitch, complete with a CD of selected tracks from the same concert, which was released this week?

That will be put into February's list but I will say....absolutly [****!!****] brilliant!!!! Was giving it some at home before the match on Saturday and in my opinion, there is nothing this year that can or will touch it!!!!!!

I was at the Ipswich gig on that tour and what a gig!!!! [****!!****] blinding!!!

I always look forward to your reviews Gazza.

You got some quality tunes down there mate, i can't comment on the Artic Monkeys album as i haven't heard it yet but the ordinary Boys album is top drawer. A bit of The Clash crossed with The Jam and some morrisey type vocals. Their version of Locomotives Rudi's in Love being the highlight for me.

I was listening to some of my old stuff yesterday and come across Love is like oxygen by The Sweet, now that did sound good.

Just finished going through the Sweet back cat and they were a top rock band...Albums like Sweet Fanny Adams, Give Us A Wink and the sorely underrated Off The Record...

Okay, they were a classic singles band but their albums are very over looked and are a must to re discover...Oh and they were remastered last year, hence the re visit!!!!

Dilbert i do hope your not one of these guy's with 2 CD collections.

There's the one in the front room on show which contains Radiohead, The Strokes, Coldplay, and then there's the one hidden away in the bedroom out of sight which contains Abba, The Carpenters, The Hollies.

There's room for all types of music mate ,as long as it's played well.

By the way i did not have a scarf, i did however have a pair of them silly baggy trousers.

A bit of fun Niel....

No Dilbert is a serious music lover but he was old enough to be able to sneer at the glam craze of the early '70's...whereas myself...well lots of good stuff came out of it and it was fun.

As for Sweet...yep, they were a singles band who tried to get serious and concentrate on albums...some of their efforts were a bit heavy handed but they are one of my guilty pleasures along with Status Quo.

You’ve got it wrong Andy q, I don’t have 2 collections of CD’s but only 2 CD’s. The first being Julie Andrew’s singing the songs of Led Zeppelin and the second being The Bonzo Dog Do Dah Band singing the hits of Rolf Harris. Now if it’s vinyl that’s different story. By the way who are The Strokes ? and The Hollies would never be hidden in the back bedroom – just reminiscing, Lewisham Odeon in 1969 played with The Scaffold. Jimi Hendrix and The Cream in the Bromley Court Hotel, those were the days !! See I do like all types of music.

By the way I didn’t say I didn’t like The Sweet, I just said that I didn’t class them as a rock band.

Dilbert, it is a honest misconception for those that know Sweet from their singles...I mean, the likes of "Co, Co", "Wig Wam Bam" and "Little Willy" would quite rightly put them in the "bubblegum" arena but remember when singles were 7 inch pieces of plastic with two sides, an "A" & "B" side? Sometimes, the "b" sides were worth listening to....And the band made, what is now considered in some rock critic's mind the definitive cross over glam to serious rock album in Sweet Fanny Adams (ugh...not the best name for an album)...something which comes as a vidication of my loyalty to the band all those years ago when I was a teenager and the album dissapeared without a trace.

And I apologise for the "sneer" comment. I am well aware of you musical tastes. I hope that the Santana track I played last nite to your liking.

Nothing personal Dilbert, just my warped sense of humour.
