Look out for this in Fridays Gazette....

Margate U18s had a fantastic 1-0 win over a very strong Maidstone team to progress into the next round of the PLAAYA Cup. This is the second time that Margate has snuffed out Maidstone’s cup hopes, having beaten them last month in the Westview Youth Cup. This was a very gritty performance by Margate against a very accomplished Maidstone side. Maidstone made all the running in the first period of the game. In the 16th minute, Margate’s defence was pleased to see the Maidstone striker miss-kick the ball and it landed in the safe hands of Margate keeper Matt Bowles. This miss was going to typify Maidstone’s day. Although Jamie McClean and Anthony Woodward worked hard to try and build something up front for Margate, it was Maidstone who continued to push forward. In quick succession Maidstone had a header across goal, another shot was collected by Bowles and Andy Johnston cleared from a goalmouth scramble that seemed to last an eternity. Centre-back Saul Anderton helped keep Margate’s composure and toward the end of the half, Margate had a couple of half chances with shots from McClean and Woodward.

Minutes after the re-start McClean had a shot on goal and at the other end Maidstone shot over the bar from a free kick on the edge of the area. After working tirelessly on the right, making some good attacking runs and some timely defensive tackles, Paul Axon was replaced by Dan Hughes. Up-front Chris Lewis replaced Woodward. On the hour Margate went 1-0 up when McClean charged down a clearance by the Maidstone centre-back and he coolly lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper. This spurred Maidstone even more, and in the 70th minute Chaz Albrecht made a goal-saving tackle with the Maidstone attacker through on goal. Johnston was replaced by Nick Argyrides on 75 minutes. With Maidstone pushing forward, it gave Margate the opportunity to break quickly. Elliot Payne put in some quality crosses from both corners and free-kicks but Margate couldn’t capitalise. In the 85th minute, Olti Keci held the ball up well before releasing Daryn Vanhinsbergh who shot from the edge of the box. Within a minute there was another goalmouth scramble, this time with Jonny Hindley clearing off the Margate line as Maidstone claimed a goal. A minute later Maidstone were through again, but their strikers shot came back off the inside of the post and a follow up shot flashed across the Margate goal. In injury time, Lewis saw his shot well saved by the Maidstone keeper and in the final minute, Bowles had to save bravely at the feet of a Maidstone attacker. A save which ultimately saw Margate progress into the next round of the Cup.

Team: Bowles, Albrecht, Johnston (Argyrides 75), Anderton, Payne, Hindley, Axon (Hughes 58), Keci, McClean, Woodward (Lewis 58), Vanhinsbergh Subs Collis, Evans
