RSPB Survey

Recommended Posts

Am sure you twitchers are already aware of this but I saw on GMTV this morning it is the Annual Birdwatch survey for the RSPB this weekend. Chris Packham reckons that the goldfinch will get into top 10 this year due to the mild weather so has not bothered to migrate.

To save anyone questioning whether goldfinchs migrate, it is said that they migrate to France, Belgium and the Mediterranean in winter. But the majority do not migrate.

I would however say that from the evidence at Rainham Marsh this winter, there are a lot more than usual - there was a herd (thanks Bob) of about 200 to 300 of them near to the rubbish tip the other week, and they are still very common near to the main centre.

But I thought that goldfinch was already in the top ten.

Not so much a survey but more a visit to Bedfords Park this morning. Not too good, thanks to the entire canine population of Havering being walked by their look-alike owners.

Anyway, a very short list but here goes - dalmations, retrievers, yorkies, highland terriers, spaniels - sorry, wrong list.

Here goes - hundreds of blue tits all around the visitors centre.

Great tits - about fifty.

Coal tit - two

Robin - four

Chaffinch - not too sure how many but quite a few flitting around.

Four cormorant by the lake.

Plenty of black headed gulls.

Large flock of about 100 male crows.

Usual masses of magpie.

Wood pigeon.

And that's it, apart from the many squirrels which were all around the area.

I only stayed for about an hour, it was not worth the effort.
