Pressures of Football Management

YELLOW

Recommended Posts

According to news reports West Ham manager Glenn Roeder was taken ill after the Middlesbro game and was taken to hospital after he collapsed with chest pains.

This sort of thing makes you realise the pressures of football management. Roeder is only in his early 40s but it seems that the pressures of managing a struggling club have taken a toll on his health.

I was really slagging him off the other day but this is the last time I will slag off a manager (I hope!!). Roeder may not be a brilliant manager but he is a decent man who does not deserve what has happened to him.

I think maybe we should appreciate the pressure on managers these days even at a lower level. There was some criticism of Jeff King on Tuesday for his tactics, his decision to bring on Brayley too late for example.

Maybe we need to put less pressure on the manager. We all like a moan but sometimes it's not always the manager's fault. He can only rely on the 11 players on the pitch and if they don't do the business he gets the blame.

He collapsed cause West Ham actually won!! Sorry couldn't resist it! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

It does seem ironic though doesn't it?

But honestly, I don't see how Managers get most of the blame. He can only perform with what he's got. Maybe sometimes it's the players that should be sacked instead of the Manager.

Some Managers are poor, (like George Borg) and waste their lives getting at what they think is right and not what the Club/Players/Fans feel right.

Other Managers, (like Terry Brown) have the experience, knowledge, contacts and skills of creating a Championship winning team in just a few seasons.

I admit I have said sometimes in the past, after we've been out played that maybe Jeff should consult someone with Conference experience who's been that step further than him and been there, done that and learned from it. But on the other hand Jeff has taken us up four levels in the football pyramid, won numerous Trophys and attracted players of such calibre that they could still be playing Football League status.

That's the pros and cons of being a football Manager, all the fans think they know best, some do, some just have favourites and some can never be satisfied. But it's the Manager who makes the decisions whether the fans feel it's been right or not, (take the Northwich game for example).

I suppose you can only learn from experience and Jeff still being relatively young compared to Sirs Fergie and Bobby Robson, Claudio Ranieri, Sven Goran Eriksson etc. will learn from mistakes he's open to admit he's made and in time, he will get us to where he wants to get us and when he wants to get us there. It's up to him if he wants to take a promotion/back seat and employ someone more 'professional' to deal with the football side of things.

But for the minute I still think that Managers are under too much pressure from Directors and Fans and it's the commitment on the field that should be looked at.

We've had a few players before that haven't been arsed, Keith Dublin sticks in my head the most.

If the players don't do it, the club doesn't do and the Manager takes the stick. I find that unfair, especially when everyone seems to be against the Manager. Directors, Fans and Press included.

Well a lot of Hammers fans did want him out and it looks like they've got their wish. Maybe this will inspire the players!

All seems a bit dubious to me - what odds he gets 'moved' to a director of football role and some1 comes into replace him as manager. He gets to keep his great pay and all the perks and some poor sod gets the job of getting 'em promoted back in2 the premiership. Is this just one clever con???

I have to admit it does seem strange but even West Ham wouldn't stoop that low!

Think it's a bit ott suggesting some machievellian plot at Upton Park - the guy's in hospital with a blocked blood vessel in his brain (according to the bbc) - not convinced this would be easily faked!

Not even convinced it's stress related - could be some medical condition which would have meant problems whatever job he was doing.

Getting back to the original post - the mangers that achieve longevity (ie Bobby Robson or Alex Ferguson) are a) driven men - "There are no setbacks, only challenges" type of thing, and B) able to leave the job at the office - ie Ferguson and his racehorses.

according to the standard some one lobbed a bottle through the window of his house, left his family a bit shook up...

roeder is one of the quiet ones, keeps it all bottled up..im all for a stiff upper lip but the ones who keep it all in are as likely to blow a fuse as the full on ranters...somewhere in the middle is the place to be
