Promotion/Relegation

Slow month during the off season so to stir it up-

What does everyone think about-

As step 5 is the only step where one team goes up and often a team runs away with the title and games are played for nothing from Nov-

How about the team that finishes top wins the title and Championship BUT the top four at the end of season go into play offs for promotion (subject to ground grading issues). Rather than let the old cliche of the fourth placed team winning promotion you could load it that the teams that finished first and second would play their playoff games at home in a one legged tie hence giving them a big advantage and in the 'final' that would also be played on the higher teams home ground as a one off tie again rewarding the team that finished higher at the end of the regular season. This way teams down to half way will be able to play for something well past March and perhaps get a few more supporters through the gates instead of playing basically meaningless friendlies. The system could also be used to decide the second relegation place although maybe not so popular. The system is very popular in Rugby where the League title winners can often not win the 'playoff cup'

Only an idea to pass the summer!!

Would certainly make for a more entertaining end to the season.

I think Rugby even goes as far as having the top 6 sides, with the top 2 sides only coming in at the "semi-final" stage.

Dont think that would work because only a few have ground grading. I would prefer that teams like Chipstead last season get relegated and the team with ground grading in the top 4 of CCL auto get promoted as well as the winners.

CCL in a mess like I've said before CCL semi senior status.

I saw Neil Shipperley in the NLP saying something similar about play-offs for the CoCo and I fully agree.

Because there were loads of clubs folding or resigning (Team Bath, Fisher etc) and it meant that this trickled down so that some teams in Step 4 could be reprieved. Who and which leagues this was was based on a points per game process and Chipstead were lucky enough to escape thanks to their record.

Not too confident then... winning team up next 4 in play off with winner securing promotion..You are still a [****!!****] though....

The idea of play off games being planned to favour the higher league position already happens in the leagues above. The only difference is that this is for the second promotion spot, with the winners of the league guaranteed to go up. So second place play fifth at home and and third play fourth at home. When you spend 9 months or so playing game after game and eventually end up winning your league, to suggest that you should then play another set of games to actually get promotion is daft. You win the league, you have the criteria to move up, so you go up. The problem will always be there, as long as the CCL has only one promotion spot. The two seasons previous to last were won with loads of games still left to play so, yes, there would have been a lot of games deemed as "nothing to play for". Last season the race was much more of a contest and there were still teams battling away in March and April, so it was much better. When you talk of rugby as an example, the difference is that these are the top leagues and the aim is not to get promotion - league such as Guiness Premiership and Rugby League Premiership (don't know full name!). Our aim, in most cases, is to get to the next step and the only way at the moment is to win the league. Our league may be able to put pressure on those above to change this in the future, but I honestly think that we would have to work with other league around us and try to push for a play off between leagues, where perhaps the second and third side in each of the feeder leagues go into a play of and there are one or two spaces allocated in the likes of Ryman and Southern leagues. That could certainly work in my view, and it would generate more interest at the end of the season, as you stated. As for now, our best option is to have an end of season championship plate play off, where perhaps teams down from 2nd to 9th are placed in a similar format and this ends with a final between the two remaining teams. It would consist of only 7 games and could be started and finished within a week of the season ending. Just a thought. Anyway, we start training tonight and it seems to have come round rally quickly once again. Best of luck to all of us and let's hope we have a good battle for that one space at the top, whoever is in the league and however many teams there are. Let's also hope we have good representation in the FA Vase and Cup, as things like that will help us raise the profile of the league, quality wise. I'm done now, better do some work!
