BJR, paganism is not a religion, philosophy or way of life. It is a term derived to describe non-christian belief systems (religions if you will) and was generally used in a derogatory manner.

 

In recent years the New Age types adopted the term for the MODERN belief system, based on reverence for nature, that they had devised.

 

Very little is known of pre-Roman religion in Britain. Obviously the few literary sources are classical and should be treated with great caution. Everything else must be inferred from archaeology.

 

The numerous bog bodies found in Britain and Europe probably met their end in a variety of ways. The current interpretation is that Lindow Man, who I presume ytou are referring to, is one of the many whose death was likely to be associated with ritual or religion. Sacrifice or willing death, punished wrongdoer or defeated enemy, no-one can tell.

 

Mick Aston is an honorary professor at Bristol University, I believe, and is the only professor on the regular Time Team line-up. Others appear as specialist guests from time to time, can't think of any off-hand though.

A WEEKEND OF EXTENSIVE BROADSIDE QUAFFING AND WHILST THERE SOME MORRIS DANCERS WERE DANCING OUTSIDE THE PUB AND GOT ME AND THE BEST MAN INVOLVED.
