Le Tour de France.

Recommended Posts

Cycling in Le Tour de France, come July the domestic football league season has finished and before Channel 4 gave it away to Sky, I used to watch it every year.

It is exciting, went to a live stage between Huy and Liege (Belgium got a visit from the tour) back in about 1996, you get the full build up, ex riders like Eddie Mercx (A Belgian Racing Legend) waving in open top cars to the fans, then you get the pom pom girls dancing, doing the splits passing you razza mataz, hats, flags etc all free.

Then the race you watch it on a large screen erected near where your standing, to get a good view to see your heros cross the line you need to be there 5 hours before they go pass, then in the space of 10-15 seconds, the whole field races past you, and it is all over for another year. (Unless if you go on and watch another stage, they have about 20 and it lasts for about a month)

If you have never been, it is worth watching / attending. You also have the (Belgian Race) Tour of Flanders, (Flanders is the Flemmish Speaking part of the country) obviously not as high profile in the Uk, but in Belgium it is high on there calendar.

Normally i cant stand cycling but every year i get hooked on the tour, the sprint finishes on the flat stages, the mountain climbs, the team tactics in the pack, the time trials and after three weeks just seconds seperate some truely superhuman efforts from supreme athletes.

Give it a go from the start and you might understand what a terrific event it is.
