Hi Gazza.

You're probably a little confused at the reference to the police. Although I don't know what a 'complaint form' is, as the matter has been raised, permit me to enlighten you.

This dates back to police inquries into a money-spinning idea by The Mighty Saints aimed at local businesses in St Albans, resulting in a draw, the winner of which was to be the shirt sponsor for the following season. The police became involved and, after taking statements from various people, the Chairman at the time was interviewed at the Police Station 'under caution'. [You may not know Gazza that 'under caution' means that the person concerned was given the 'You are not obliged to say anything but anything you do say etc. etc.' warning]

The papers were then sent by the police to the Crown Prosecution Service. Fortunately for the club and the person concerned, after consideration, the CPS decided not to prosecute but rather found that this was a 'bad promotion'. An appropriate warning was given I gather, and the papers were filed. No stain on anyone's character.

AFF was the co-ordinator of this 'bad promotion'.

invited or requested?

You collected 42 £250s from local businesses for a kit sponsorship draw and then the police received a complaint about where the money had gone. I wonder who made that complaint Peter?

Fortunately, the Herts Police Detective Chief Inspector said to me that he knew the complaint was a waste of time and so it proved. Every penny was accounted for. Shame on he who made those false allegations, eh Peter?

You are an intelligent man. One day you'll discover that by trying to help, you can do so much more than break things down.

I genuinely feel sorry for you. In your eyes the ultimate condemnation I would imagine - sympathy from Buzz!

Hi Gazza.

No doubt your Chairman and your club conduct themselves properly so I can't see him or anyone else going for the dodgy booze scam. Apart from some deluded Del boy type, perhaps, but then a deluded Del-boy wouldn't make the dizzy heights of Chairman of a Non League football club, thankfully. Phew!

Changing the subject altogether, how's New Lodge, by the way? Any works planned for the Summer?

You could probably identify ground improvements that would qualify for grant monies from Sport England or the Football Foundation or whatever its called nowadays. Work of that kind doesn't come cheap and the likely cost will come into the 'significant' category. It wont be just a couple of thousand pounds, its likely be of the order of £65,000, say.

You might get a couple of quotes for the work from local firms and file them. [File the quotes, that is, not the local firms.] Then buy the materials but get a group of fans and do the work yourselves! There are always willing hands and the range of trades available from the terraces is remarkably wide. Incidentally, the quotes from local companies should be on the basis that only new materials would be supplied. Various pro clubs relocate or overhaul their stadia, so when you come to do the work, second-hand materials can be found and should be used. Its often advertised for sale in the NLP and suchlike. In the example quoted, you could probably buy the stuff for £4/5,000 if that.

How's that? £65,000 worth of work completed for £4/5000. Good eh? Entrepreneurial.

All of that is fine but here is something that wont even occur to you.

A crook might be tempted to make a grant application based, not on the £4/5000 spent, but on the £65,000 from the original quotes. Don't even go there Gazza. Quite simply, it's illegal too. Obtaining money under false pretences. Fraud. Its one thing to be Chairman of a Non League football club but you wouldn't want to be running a team at some open prison for a couple of years.
