Greg_Dyke
What about Tony Roberts as Manager ? I think there is some problem about him playing for Dagenham next season, due to his retirement through injury, a few years ago, so he cant play in the Football League. I think he has good coaching credentials, but is of course un-proven !
AFF
You obviously weren't around when he left us, Greg..... He is ceratinly "proven" as far as most on the terraces at t'Park are concerned.
Greg_Dyke
oh dear, I sense a little sarcasm.... Not a fan favourite then !
AFF
Others can speak for themselves Greg, but I don't think that Tony Roberts was rehearsing his aceeptance speech for Supporters' Player of the Season, nor Players' Player come to that, when he left us. Laz
..or at any time that he's played against us!
JKiF
I would guess that 1 STH would do that thing where you run on the pitch and rip it up* (the ST) in front of him (Roberts) if that happened, Greg. anyway about bloody Dean Austin, why the animosity? AFF
Can anyone remember the name of the 'keeper who was called up that day to take Roberts place? Was it at Billericay? A bro, as I recall? [Two out of three of the facts isn't bad, but what about his name?]
GHA EFM
Alastair Joslin, Heybridge, we lost 2-1. Not a bro.
AFF
Even though Heybridge is in Essex, nought out of three for me then, GHA. Are you absolutely sure, by the way?
GHA EFM
93% sure, although I could be wrong.
Rob_the_Saint
Not Noel Imber then, against Purfleet? 94% sure on that one.
GHA EFM
Joslin was called up that Tuesday when Roberts went AWOL, 100% sure on that one.
AFF
Noel Imber was the following season as I recall, Rob. Played in the side against 'The Legends XI' for Steve Clark's testimonial. Is Noel still at cash-rich, The Woood, I wonder? AWOL, GHA? Whaddyamean AWOL? Surely he was genuinely injured that day? Rumours that he said he wouldn't play unless he was given a 200% pay rise, notwithstanding his contract with the club were surely unfounded. The rumour that he couldn't get to a telephone and let the Manager know that he was injured is a problem that anyone could encounter, surely. Similarly I'm sure that his announcement that he was to leave these shores and join the .... [now do I remember this one].... Los Angeles Pirates, was surely a typo on the part of the newspaper. They didn't exist! He meant Garry Hill's Dagenham & Redbridge all along. I blame these local hacks for all of it. Great club and team man, Tony Roberts. Perhaps Gibbo should include him on the short-list for Manager, after all.
Laz
Who was the keeper at Hastings in the Trophy?
AFF
1928, 1957 or 1971 Laz? Come on Laz, you must have been at that game where Roberts pulled his temporary disappearing act. I was sure that it was Billericay. I don't mind deferring to that whippersnapper GHA as he has a clear mind, devoid of the minor incosequentialities of life like Income Tax, National Insurance Contributions, mortgage repayments, children, work etc., but it would be good to get another view. AFF
I've just spoken to our anorak to satisfy myself. Heybridge Swifts it was, Alastair Joslin it was and we did, indeed, lose 2-1. GHA didn't get our scorer which was Paul Turner and no, he wasn't a bro. Joslin wasn't. Nor was Paul Turner, but yoou knew what I meant anyway. January 18th 2000. Hi Laz. If you mean the 3-0 triumph on January 25th 1999, when we won 3-0 with goals from Clark, Turner and Gentle D., the Saints' custodian was: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Mervyn Cawston. YELLOW
Was Noel Imber the guy who used to date Victoria Beckham's sister? Seem to remember him getting some stick off our lot when he was playing at Boreham Wood.
Rob_the_Saint
He was/is indeed, Yellow. AFF, Imber took over in March 2000, against Hendon, presumably after the Welsh welcher had left for good.
Maldini66
That's right could kick for England, but couldn't catch a cold Any news on the Gaffer front?
AFF
Yes, Rob. That would have been when Roberts set off to catch the ferry to Los Angeles from Tilbury Docks but bumped into Garry Hill on the A12 somewhere and turned out for the Daggers that Saturday instead, presumably. Rumours are reaching me that some of the biggest names in football up to and including that Swedish bloke have expressed interest in the Mighty Saints job. I can hardly contain myself waiting for the St Albans Observer and Herts Advertiser this week.
EFM The Firm, The Voice
We should be offering the job to Sven if nothing else but the publicity!
AFF
There are times when the old saying that 'all publicity is good publicity' isn't strictly the case and today's St Albans Observer is an example, EFMTFTV. Pathetic. :0(
