London survives Olpympic 2012 cut

Recommended Posts

No major surprises there then - England go through to the final selection process for the 2012 Olympic Games.

The International Olympic Committee chose London, Paris, New York, Madrid and Moscow to go forward to the final vote next year.

Rio de Janeiro, Istanbul, Leipzig and Havana failed to survive the cut.

Germany are not due for another Olympic Games yet, and Leipzig was not a very good choice as the German candidate.

Havana was never going to make it. What will the political situation be there in 2012?

Istanbul and Rio de Janeiro are not quite ready to organise such an event yet.

Personally, I don't think it would be fair to choose a city which has had it before.

Well Colin that leaves New York or Madrid then...New York wont get it because everybody hates the Yanks so looking good for Madrid.

I reckon Paris will get it because the French do bribes better than the other contenders.

I don't see why either New York, Madrid or Moscow should even be considered, leaving it between us and the frogs. The Yanks have had two summer olympics in the past 20 years, not to mention the last winter one. Spain had the olympics there in Barcelona in 1992 and Moscow staged one in the early 80's. We on the other hand, have only had one in early 1900's and acted as a late replacement venue for the post war games in 1948. Reckon the IOC should return that favour one day and let us stage the event proper!

I reckon that Paris will get it for exactly the same reason as above.

My personal choice would be Madrid. To suggest that Madrid should not have it because Barcelona had it recently would be similar to saying Edinburgh should not have it because London had it recently.

Paris and London have each had it twice, and the Moscow Olympics were very recent.

In the current climate of opinion, New York doesn't stand a chance.

The Hamburg newspaper this morning has the headline "Olympics; Leipzig Out - Hamburg's Chance".

The article goes on to suggest that Hamburg must have a good chance of hosting the Olympic Games in 2016. This is journalism at its worst. Assuming New York will not be chosen for 2012, I think the chances of a European venue in 2016 are pretty slim. Even if a European city were to be chosen, I hardly think that Hamburg would be that choice.

If Turkey were to join the EU in 2020, as they probably require fifteen years to complete their accession talks which may begin early next year, Istanbul would be a wonderful choice for the Olympics of that year.

How can you even think of 2016, I worry thinking about next year because I will be a year older.

Did anyone see the BBC London News last night (the one at 6.30)They had a feature on what the people of the local area thought about us holding the Olympics. The presenter was some old slapper who spoke with an ackney accent and could not pronounce er h's or t's.

The locals didn't seem to give a f&*k as to whether we got the games, where as the Paris locals were all really enthusiastic. We won't get it anyway because when it comes to these type of things most foreginers are biased against us anyway. Look at the 2006 World Cup.

Inside the newspaper, it goes on to suggest that if New York is not chosen for 2012, the venues for 2016 and 2020 are unlikely to be European. Which European cities are likely to be candidates for the 2024 Olympic Games?

So Barbara Cassini has gone is replaced by Seb Coe. Just brings cak memories of the 2006 World Cup farce. There's the German team headed by Franz Beckenbaur, one of the most cultured, articulate and diplomatically astute footballers of our time, ably supported by glamourous, multi'lingual supermodel, Claudia Schiffer. Oh, and hear arrive the England delegation - Bobby Charlton and Tony Banks, the Charisma Brothers!

And we wonder why we lost.

Seriously though, lets face it, after the 2005 World Athletics Championship debacle, the inability to erect a big tent on the Greenwich peninsula, the regular bankrupcy of the governing bodies of British athletics and the fact that we don't even get a point in Eurovision should tell us that i) we can't organise a p-up in a brewery ii) no one is going to vote for us as they all see us as quasi-Americans iii) if they did vote for us, the next government would just cancel it saying that it cost to much.

As a country we really need to get ourselves together, abandon the individualism created by Thatcher for an equitable and integrated society, before we even think ourselves worthy/capable of winning and hosting an event like the Olympics.

Right, now that's off my chest I'm going for a cup of tea.

So who is the Franz Beckenbauer of England?

Who is the Claudia Schiffer of England?

By the way, although it is correct to say that Franz Beckenbauer is one of the most cultured, articulate and diplomatically astute footballers of our time, the diplomatic astuteness has grown to Machiavellian proportions as we saw, for instance, in the way Germany beat South Africa in the voting for the 2006 World Cup.

Colin, so what's your point?

Don't spare any tears for South Africa over 2006,whose only positive point was that they they're all really nice, happy racially tolerant people now - my bottom (and when I say racial I don't just mean the colour of your skin, I'm talking about ethnicity). Feel sorry for Morocco who have been stitched up again. I just thought it was great that Blatter found himself politically out-maneouvred.

The main point I was trying to make is that Britain (not just England) are a bumbling bunch of fools when it comes to project management and implementation, with the political nous and cunning of a dog [***!!***].

Since you made the point that Britain, or in this case England, did not make a good presentation of their case for holding the 2006 World Cup, I thought that people on this forum might have positive suggestions as to specific things they should have done to make it better.

The point about Beckenbauer was simply a thought that if it is necessary to organise such things against people who wish to vote the 'wrong' way, then we have to decide whether hosting the World Cup is really worth compromising moral values to this extent.

And to think that the British were considered the masters of political intrigue and deception!!!

Perhaps our Olympic & World Cup bids should be directed by retired MI5/6 employees.

But then.....that wouldn't be sporting! <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

What we should have done with the 2006 bid is have not made it and stuck by our agreement with the Germans to allow them a free hand, thus not alienating ourselves from the rest of UEFA and finding ourselves voting for Blatter against Johannson in a vain attempt to smarm up to him. We then embarrassed ourselves by trying to buy Welsh and Northern Irish votes to oust David Will from his FIFA vice-presidential position. I could go on ...and on...

This is the general level of incompetence I believe we will see in the Olympic bid. And if we do get the Games, I bet we'll make the Greeks look organised then we'll cry off building new stadia and ask the IOC if we can move it all to Sheffield where they have a wonderful University track, honest.

I could go on but I despair. Colin, you're in the right place, I would bother coming back. Now where's my European Constitition referendum ballot paper?
