FA Cup Final 30/05/2009 Chelsea v Frimley Green

Recommended Posts

Frimley Green have done non-league football proud be reaching the FA Cup Final.

It all started back in August when a free kick from Mark Peters and a penalty save from Matt Watson gave Frimley their first FA Cup win for some time.

Two weeks later Frimley faced CoCo premier outfit and previous Wembley finalists Epsom & Ewell. Frimley lead 1 - 0 at half time thanks to Chris Shearer, but Epsom took the lead in the second half. With seconds remaining, Frimley threw goalkeeper Matt Watson forward for a corner, and his volley went in top corner to force a replay. A single goal from Ruffles was enough to send Frimley through to face Burgess Hill Town.

The trip to Sussex went well as coming from 2 goals down, a brace from Mark Peters, and 1 each from Mark Thomas, Paul Wilsher and Gareth Rapley earnt a home time with Bognor Regis Town.

No one likes playing at Frimley and this applied to Bognor as despite continious pressure, Frimley held on for a 0 - 0 draw.

The tables turned in the replay with goals from Danny Harrison and Gareth Rapley giving Frimley a surprise 2 - 0 win.

Another home tie was the prize, and the visitors were Eastleigh.

A 2 - 1 win with goals from Ruffles and Mark Robertson put Frimley through to the 4th Qualifying round.

Harlow Town were the visitors and were much fancied, but again thanks to the infamous Frimley pitch, another surprise result saw Frimley win 3 - 0 thanks to a hat trick from Mark Peters.

A home tie in the first round proper was the reward. Facing League 2 outfit Macclesfield Town, the tie was switched to Aldershot's Recreation Groud by order of the Police and the FA. Matt Watson saved a first half penalty before goals from Andrew Grace and Ruffles gave Frimley a 2 - 0 win.

Round 2 was a trip to Stoke to play Port Vale. Watched by Robbie Williams, he and the rest of the world could not believe their eyes as Frimley romped to a 3 - 1 win. Goals from Mark Thomas, Danny Harrison and Scott Brighty put Frimley 3 - 0 up with Port Vale scoring a last minute consolation through Dodds.

The thrid round produced a plum home tie with Everton, again played at Aldershot Town. David Moyes did not take the game lightly and played a strong side that included Arteta and Cahill. Frimley defended hard and rode their luck with Everton hitting the woodwork 4 times but Frimley hit the Toffees on the counter and scored the only goal of the game thanks to Wilsher.

This is the stuff that dreams are made of as Frimley were rewarded with an away trip to Anfield and the might of Liverpool. As expected, a weakend XI was put out by Liverpool and the hosts took the lead through Ngog. Midway through the second half a free kick was dispatched by Peters into the top corner to send the travelling support of one man and his dog wild.

The replay, this time at the Madejski Stadium went into extra time with substitute Gareth Rapley curling the ball past Pepe Reina for a 1 - 0 win.

The 5th round draw produced a home tie with Aston Villa, again played at Reading FC. 15000 Aston Villa fans filled the stadium with Frimley contributing just 5000, but this did not prevent the performance of the round infront of the live Sultana Sports cameras.

Frimley took a 4 minute lead through Peters, before Villa levelled with a Milner penalty after 8 minutes. Ruffles restored Frimley's lead with Jamie Shannon sealing the win in the 76th minute.

A 10th home tie pitched Frimley against Middlesborough. The Madejski did not sell out this time as the preference for Boro fans was to watch the game on Sultana Sports.

Wheater gave Boro' the lead with Laister equalising for Frimley 5 minutes after the break. Frimley took the lead through Peters and managed to defend for the rest of the game. Boro should have equalised in the final minute, but with the goal at his mercy, Alfonso Alves fired wide.

And so 19 April 2010, and Frimley make their first ever trip to Wembley for the Sunday semi-final against Manchester United.

Neither side could break the deadlock, with both Foster and Watson in both goals making decent saves. Frimley survived a penalty scare when Harrison appeard to trip Welbeck in the box, but referee Riley played on.

The game went to penalties. Peters missed for Frimley, but Watson saved Ferdinand's effort. Ruffles then scored and Watson saved Berbatov's kick. Thomas, Vidic, Wilsher & Anderson all converted leaving Frimley needing to score to win. Brighty smashed the ball home to send Frimley into the final against Chelsea.

I have been running a chart all season of what the progress has been.

Frimley 1 Guildford 0

Epsom & Ewell 2 Frimley 1

Burgess Hill 5 Epsom 2

Burgess Hill 0 Bognor Regis 0 (BH 2 BR 0 replay)

Burgess Hill 2 Eastleigh 1

Burgess Hill 0 Harlow 3

Harlow 0 Macclesfield 2

Port Vale 1 Macclesfield 3

Macclesfield 0 Everton 1

Livepool 0 Everton 0 (Liv 0 Eve 1 replay)

Everton 3 Aston Villa 1

Everton 2 Middlesborough 1

Man Utd 0 Everton 0 (Eve win 4 - 2 on pens)

Chelsea ?? Everton ??

I might put a tenner on Everton

Pure fiction TC, Watto would have been out with his broken fingernail so couldn't have saved a Macclesfield penalty. Therefore, the penalty wouldn't have been saved by the dodgy back-up keeper and Frimley would have ended up with a thrashing wink
