The respective home and away records suggested a close contest was likely, although Rangers looked the stronger side for the first half and led 2-0 at the break. Amersham pulled a goal back just three minutes into the second half with a rather dubious penalty after the ball had been fired directly at a defender's arm from no more than a few feet away. His arm didn't seem to be away from his body but the opposition all appealed in unison and the penalty was given. Hopes of a fightback faded just five minutes later with further controversy at the other end. A defender and a forward came together inside the Amersham box, with the defender apparently obstructing his opponent to allow his goalkeeper to reach the loose ball first, but on a signal from the linesman the defender was penalised for an earlier infringement outside the box and shown a red card for denying a clear scoring opportunity. Amersham generally made light of their disadvantage to make a fight of it and were a bit unlucky when Rangers scored a third goal twenty minutes from the end with a speculative 20 yard shot, deflecting off a defenders boot to leave the keeper with no chance as it looped under the crossbar. The venue is basic old school county league ground in a verdant Chiltern setting, not unlike their more illustrious neighbours Chesham United. The pitch is cut into the side of a hill, surrounded by a post and rail fence, with a small seated stand above a grass bank on the top side. On the lower side are the dugouts with a derelict and now roofless brick building below, which I assume once housed the changing facilities. The near end as you enter has a clubhouse and dressing rooms in separate modern buildings. Amersham seem to have remained a constant presence at second tier county league level for as long as I can remember, whilst many of their erstwhile opponents have moved up to fill the many vacancies opened up by successive restructuring of the non-league pyramid but it's none the worse for that. The ground was a leisurely 20 minute stroll from Amersham Underground Station at the far end of the Metropolitan Line. A pleasant enough walk in the spring sunshine but I'm not sure I'd want to do it in the dark with a combination of narrow roads and unlit footpaths for some of the route. The two best teams over the whole season. I don’t view everything through yellow and blue glasses.

Any idea what’s happening with the Old Bradwell Utd v Sarratt game? Chatting with someone from Old Bradwell, it’s the 3rd postponement. Eynesbury United must be kicking themseIves in what was onIy their third home League game aII season that they faiIed to win and having Iead at the intervaI: Spartan South Midlands League Division 2 Eynesbury United (1) 1 Bovingdon (0) 2 Eynesbury United failed to get the points that would have seen them finish in the promotion places after two late Bovingdon goals saw the visitors take all three points. On a day when a point would have done United but like so many times this season failed to capitalise when on top and ultimately paid the price. A good crowd of 110 enjoyed a very good game with both sides playing some good football. United took the lead on 24 minutes when a superb cross from Dixon who found Carberry and his header beat Fallow in the Bovingdon goal. United had more chances to extend that lead but could not find that all important finish. The Bulls paid for this when Bovingdon substitute scored twice to finish off United’s promotion hopes. A gutting way to end the season but we will go again next season, everyone at United would like to thank everyone for their support this season and the sponsors whom without we would not be able to do what we do, have a great summer and see you next season.
