Gravesend and Northfleet Reserves match report away to Hitchin Town F.C. in the Capital League Monday 6/9/04.

Result: won 2-6

In the 5th minute of this game Tafazzul Islam continued his rich vein of scoring form slotting the ball home for first blood to the visitors. The Fleet continued to carve open the opposition’s defence seemingly at will and were very unlucky not to go further ahead with good chances falling to Tom Davis and Yinka Salaam. However the scores remained the same until the 20th minute with Islam again finishing with a flourish.

Hitchin began to get a foothold in the game and was very unlucky a few minutes later. It was the 25th minute when the very impressive Bobby Dance, the Hitchin center forward, scored a brace to reduce the deficit. The second of these goals was a superbly executed lob over Charlie Mitten to level the scores.

A thunderbolt from James Pinnock just before half time was well saved by Neil Cheek in the Hitchin goal.

The second half started as the first half had finished with Gravesend taking the initiative and a great solo effort by James Pinnock, 5 minutes after the re-start, put the Fleet ahead 2-3.

Hitchin began to put Gravesend under a lot more pressure and Charlie Mitten performed well to keep them at bay. With 30 minutes to go Andrew Willis replaced Yinka Salaam with Islam going wide right and Jimmy Jackson wide left. This gave the team a much better balance. Jackson was unlucky when his free kick, awarded for a back pass to the keeper, was hit just over the bar. A quality finish by the impressive Tom Davis put the Fleet further ahead after good work by Lee Gledhill. With 10 minutes to go and Jackson tearing the Hitchin defence apart down the left hand side, Islam managed to get on the end of one of Jacko’s superb crosses to make the score 2-5 to the visitors. In the dying minutes Jackson went just wide with a right foot curler but his finish a minute later was sheer class helping Gravesend win with a super 2-6 score line.

Gravesend: Mitten, Gledhill, Rouse(Spencer), Ada Omgba, Simpson(Harris), Bouadji, Salaam(Willis), Davis, Pinnock, Islam, Jackson. Subs: Harris, Spencer, Willis

As has been suggested numerous times here the problem with the reserve games is that they are arranged and rearranged at extremely short notice, ie the day before. This means publishing any sort of fixture list is pointless.

The day before would be ample if put on a website and/or Fleetline. If the players are given enough notice, which they obviously must otherwise they wouldn't be able to play (!!!) then surely it couldn't be too difficult for the club to give notice to the supporters either. Not aimed at you, Jimmy, just a general observation.
