Billericay Gazette

One thing really bugs me, our local paper with the biggest coverage, never seems to make billericay football club a priority. Simons piece in there is always very good and gets a decent space allocated to it but why, considering the importance and the fact its the only the second time in the clubs history, did the paper not make more of this story and put it on the back page. Instead there is a story about fencing but to really rub it in they have reported about Hornchurch's financial plight.

To me this is terrible. Its a local paper and covers crap like the winner of a knitting competion yet fails to mention the towns football club being in the FA Cup. If it wasnt for simons coloumn then the paper would have ignored it all together.

my point wasnt that the game is not reported as TC rightly pointed out simon does that, but I feel his report shouldnt be 2 pages into the sports news and should feature on the back page, afterall the local fencing club do not attract 500 fans when its in action.

I feel they should have sent a reporter to cover the build up to the game at the club, maybe an interview with justin, or someone from the BTSA. Its not just a sports story, its a little piece of history but instead we get to read about Hornchurch going bust and our own club gets pushed to the inside covers.

The Gazettes sport coverage seems to be devoted to the exploits of Brentwood, St Martins and Shenfield School rugby teams etc and of course Brentwood Town (but only if they ever make it past the first round of the Vase). I've telephoned previously about their crap coverage of sport in general and all they suggest is that you write a report yourself!!

I think (though I'm not sure) the Gazette has cut sports coverage generally - the number of pages seems to be one less than before. It seems that the photographs are the things to have got the flick.

Part of the problem is we've not had many home games on Saturday's recently, they've had a photographer at most if not all of our Sat home games, unfortunatley they don't send photographers to away games. Agree that we should be on the back page though...

Generally I think local sports coverage is being marginallised - people can now get more up-to-date information elsewhere (ie the net) and so it's difficult for them to compete.

Right my turn to join the debate and regular readers of the forum will know I don’t usually get involved unless my hackles are really raised.

Like many a True Blues fan I was appalled to find that Hx seemingly had a more prominent importance in my B&WG this morning, then I cast my mind back to discussions on the BTFC forum and with club officials 2 or 3 seasons back….

I recall being told the Sports Pages of the B&WG operate on the traditional form of the most important sports coverage being on page 1 of the Sports section and not on the popular tabloid approach of stick the high profile stuff on the back page. Hence whilst we think BTFC coverage has been relegated to the inner pages just after the job ads, the Sports Editor believes he’s placed our reports in the best location.

I’m sure we’d all agree this old fashioned approach is wrong!

Now what we need to do is get this culture changed and the biggest sports draw in the district where it belongs in the local rags ON THE BACK PAGE. Perhaps a number of letters and emails to the Sports editor sport@essexchronicle.co.uk or better still the papers Managing editor Roger Watkins editorial@brentwood-gazette.co.uk might do the trick, or better still lets make sure the Results and Achievements warrant Front-page coverage, starting of course this Saturday!

By the way has anybody else noticed that from next week our Tuesday Matches will be reported 8 days later (see P64 bottom right had corner) Gazette First for sport – Not Likely!

Hmmm, well you were Step 2 last season now you are Step 3, I'll leave the maths to you!

Probably don't want to mention the FA Cup because whenever you have some success in FA compertitions you lot bang on about it for years (see FA Vase), I can see it now Novemeber 13th 2029 25yrs anniversary since that FA Cup day.

On a semi-serious note though, I [****!!****] hate Stevenage and do really hope you stuff them ....... did I just say that You can keep this post in the vaults if you want (maybe a new siggy for Gazza )

If you think you are hard done by try living in Brentwood and supporting Billericay. We see only the odd photo as coverage. They still have the basketball team in there which has now left Brentwood.

The way it appears to work is that thay change the internal pages but keep the outer pages the same, so if it was on the back I would see it.

I am not the only Billericay supporter in this area.
