Time to move on

Scamp here, the Aldershot Manager said the other day that they want to claim their "rightful place" in the Football League. Aldershot TOWN have never been in it so how can it be rightful? I remember getting stuffed 9-1 at Southbury Road by them...oo it hurt, good job I was on the bench, or was it Cambridge Utd..not sure now

You're right. I was merely pointing out that where there is no history, the incumbents will reflect in history of others. A bit like the Yanks and the Aussies....

How can we refect in the history of 'others'.?? It was our history .We helped create that History. We were present when that history was being made. We have as much right as anyone to claim those memories as our own .

It's your history now LS, as you were there when it was created. Much like the early settlers in the US and Oz who found themselves in new territories but still clung to their heritage, this is fine. But new generations of ETFC fans will not be able to say "We were there!!!", so will not feel the ties you guys have now.

Cockfosters are just this side of the borough boundary too, I believe.

Southgate (Athletic? Olympic?) were once in the Spartan League - I remember watching Brimsdown Rovers play away to them in the very late 80's or early 90's.

Edmonton are of course long gone, merged with someone (Tufnell Park?)to become Haringey Borough.

All completely irrelevant of course.

I did, I'm very proud of what the Town have achieved in the last three years, we are the REAL ENFIELD TOWN, they are the real Enfield FC.

Maybe we should call ourselves "Real Enfield", "Sporting Enfield" might be pushing it (and Athletico Enfield might make people think of the Harriers. Sunday will be special regardless of whether we win or not! Exiles versus Homer's! Whoever you Simp-athise with!

If we do beat you, and go on to do well in the Vase, how many of you Town fans would come to watch the later rounds, especially the final?! I know that if ETFC get to White Hart Lane I'll be there, I might even support you on the day (though I doubt it )

Coupwotcoup why don't you look at your own club before joining the 'real' Enfield debate? Romford are not the original Romford club in any shape or form. The current Romford can be traced from Collier Row following the merger in the 90s. At least Enfield supporters formed their own club rather than employing bully boy merger tactics.

I see where you are coming from, but the arguments hardly equate? Enfield Town and AFC Wimbledon were formed by supporters because of the ongoing problems with their clubs. Romford were dead and buried for 14 years and reformed in 1992. As for the Collier Row affair, all I can say is what would you have done? Most teams in the UK with the suffix United have come from mergers various, some friendly, some foul.

We had some great success when the money man came to Romford in 95, and my friend, as with 95% of football fans, when you are told you can jump two divisions, have a ground of your own(?????) and suffer a minor name change for one season, most would warm to the opportunity, regardless of on whose toes one treads.

In hindsight, the merger/takeover wasn't done in the best possible taste.

But to reiterate, all I orignally said was that AFC and Town are different clubs from Wimbledon and Enfield, so therefore have a differing history.

That's a different question! Waltham Abbey are Waltham Abbey but there has to be a continuance with a previous club to have rights to their history!

In the case of the townies and AFC Wimbledon there is none - they were new ('breakaway') clubs.

The original clubs are still in existance therefore the history cannot be claimed but reference can obviously be made. Thus AFC can't claim to have won the FA Cup and, likewise, the townies can't claim to have won the trophy!

How far do we take this ? The current Enfield FC were formed in 1893 as Enfield Spartans (but see below).

There was already an Enfield and a North Enfield and an Enfield Wednesday and an Enfield St Lukes etc etc etc.

In 1900/01 only the Spartans remained so that was droped from the name. In 1914 they stopped playing because of the war and didn't resume again until 1920 ish at which point "Garange Park" (I believe, who were playing junior football) changed their name to Enfield FC to allow the club to continue. However, there was a continuence in committee members.

So, when was Enfield FC formed ? Pre 1893 with the original club. 1893 with the Spartans or 1919/20 ?

Didn't Everton split from Liverpool ? You don't see them claiming the previous history do you. And who's the latest... Barnsley ?
