Holiday fixtures

So there we all are, you off to Leyton, us off to Tonbridge. This really does irritate me. Why oh why are we not playing local matches at this time of year? I wrote to Nick Robinson last summer as follows:

Dear Nick,

FIXTURE PLANNING

We spoke on the telephone about the above and we agreed that I would write to you with details of my suggestion.

Rather than the League concentrate the planning of local fixtures on just two dates (traditionally Boxing Day and Easter Monday), I would suggest to the League that they consider highlighting six dates from the following for the scheduling of local fixtures:

i. August Bank Holiday Monday, 30 August 2004;

ii. Boxing Day, 26 December 2004;

iii. Christmas Bank Holiday Monday, 27 December 2004;

iv. Christmas Bank Holiday Tuesday, 28 December 2004;

v. New Years Day, Saturday 1 January 2005;

vi. New Year Bank Holiday Monday, 3 January 2005;

vii. Good Friday 25 March;

viii. Easter Saturday, 26 March 2005 and

ix. Easter Monday, 28 March 2005

For the selected six dates, I would suggest that clubs in our divisions be grouped into four groups of four clubs and two groups of three clubs, with sides playing each other home and away - please see the example attached.

As I explained to you when we spoke, it is my belief that the playing of local matches on bank holiday or holiday dates would hopefully lead to additional higher than average gates for clubs, assisting member clubs with their finances and generating higher profiles for both members and the league.

Example:

Group 1 - Billericay Town, Braintree Town,

Chelmsford City & Heybridge Swifts

August Bank Holiday Monday, 30 August 2004

Billericay Town v Chelmsford City

Braintree Town v Heybridge Swifts

Boxing Day, 26 December or Monday, 27 December 2004

Braintree Town v Chelmsford City

Heybridge Swifts v Billericay Town

Tuesday, 28 December 2004;

Billericay Town v Braintree Town

Chelmsford City v Heybridge Swifts

New Years Day, Sat 1 Jan or Bank Hol Mon, 3 Jan 2005

Chelmsford City v Billericay Town

Heybridge Swifts v Braintree Town

Good Friday 25 March or Easter Saturday, 26 March 2005

Chelmsford City v Braintree Town

Billericay Town v Heybridge Swifts

Easter Monday, 28 March 2005

Braintree Town v Billericay Town

Heybridge Swifts v Chelmsford City

Personally I don't mind you getting Chemlsford on Boxing Day, but it would be good for us to play either Ricay or Chelmsford on New Years Day. It seems a waste of a good fixture for us to come to New Lodge on a Tuesday evening in September. I'd like to see the League try to help all clubs by scheduling local derbies on holiday dates. I see you've got Wealdstone on Easter Saturday, while we play Yeading. Surely Ricay v Braintree and Wealdstone v Yeading would be better for all concerned?

What do you lot think?

...that it won't be an issue as far as us playing your team next season...We'll have the delights of Hornchurch, Grays, Pikey Island (they won't survive the Conference <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />) and Bishops Stortford to look forward to at holiday times... <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/jump.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/jump.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif" alt="" />

...but thanks for the thought.

Somebody has to give Leyton a decent attendance, that's why they plumped for us and not you! Braintree to Tonbridge is hardly disastrous, but I take your point. What the Ryman League should be doing more about (and clubs), is avoiding midweek fixtures that clash with the Chumpions League, that has a far more detrimental effect on attendances than who you get on a bank holiday.

Billericay to Leyton 25.4 miles 35 minutes
Billericay to rural Boretree 26.3 miles 46 minutes

So our group would be us, Chelmsford, Heybridge and Leyton...

You lot will just have to go and play with yourselves..... <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

But, jl, it's more fun winding us up.

Thats true of course. I particularly look forward to our games at New Lodge when we have a sweep on how many Boretree players/officials will be sent off during the game. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

It has to be said that our games at your gaff have been less fruitful for us mainly due to your time wasting tactics. However I am looking forward to next month's game as we both seem to have decent sides at the mom. How many minutes before George either gets sent off or punches (allegedly) a supporter do you reckon? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/boxing.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/offtopic.gif" alt="" />

ps even if the game's crap we can always tuck into the bacon and egg burger....yummy

I'll support your opinion of their grub jl, top notch but like their team, everything takes time.

I think for this season, we should do a sweep on how many players it takes to take a throw in. I find it amazing that any ref can let a team get away with one player picking the ball up, dropping it, another player picking the ball up, dropping it, another player strolling from the other side of the pitch, picking the ball up, dropping it...yawn. I'm bored typing it!!!

Oh and a sweep on how far Borg kicks the ball along the line, in the opposite direction of where it should be, if we're in the last 30 and the score is nil all.

Do the Boretree supporters get discount on the admission, based on how much football is played?

Yes Gazza. Last season we were giving 'em money to come in, but that's all in the past. Now we're twelve unbeaten in the League, with the division's best defensive record, having scored 11 in our last 4 attempts.

I feel we're getting close to giving value for money these days, but our little Essex derby on Jan 22 will be lively! But that's what we all look forward to surely? ‘Big’ Essex derbies at Leyton on the other hand do nothing for me!

This Boretree thing, do I have to start calling you lot Basilricay again? You know it upsets the Flag (and we were very worried about him yesterday - could've been terminal). Perhaps I'd better get my old mate Cruncher off his tractor with the go faster stripes.

And do leave those nice Canvey folks alone, I once spent two weeks on the Island one Tuesday afternoon and it was hell I can tell you!
