Any news on a new Gaffer?

Recommended Posts

Anyway - I'm expecting a phone call from the club begging me to take the job after my tactical suggestion regarding playing Drury playing off the front two.

Also I am capable of taking the club a long way - my record (albeit only on FM 2005) speaks for itself - back to back promotions all the way to the Premiership.

Could be a long wait.

Dear FF

On the basis that I know bugger all about tactics I would like to congratulate you on your vision about how best to use Mr Drury. I also feel he is best suited to a role floating behind the front two in a central position. He is wasted on the wing. He goes past two people and then gets hacked down or loses the ball. If he went past two people in the middle and slipped a little pass through to Manny we could have a new route to goal! He might even shoot for goal himself and score! I put this to Andy and he told me it would mean sacrificing width. I didn't agree with him but he picked the team. I hope whoever picks the team in future doesn't leave Jukebox stranded out on the wing where he can become a peripheral player. He is too good for that and can be a match winner if used in the right way. Matt Lovell for attacking left sided player, but never at full back.

Thank you Charles!

I must admit that when I criticised Drury's performanes in the past, perhaps it should have been aimed more at Andy Ford.

Drury IS wasted on the wing.

I thought that my suggested formation still had plenty of width. Obviously, the midfield are expected to track back to assist the defence whenever neccessary, meaning the midfield would cover a lot of pitch during the course of a match. It just means the likes of McKimm & Saunders would have to run their socks off.

Along with players such as Protheroe & Lovell pumping the ball in when crossing, just think of how many attacking options we could have.

Moussa on the bench though until the 2nd half.

Sorry young Chas, I can see what you are getting at but that won`t work at all! When playing as a component of central midfield (in a 4-4-2) you also need to be involved a fair amount which involves doing plenty of covering & tackling (and I`m putting this in context of what other players we have at the club in adjacent positions). Unfortunately while being a good player Andy is not blessed with these virtues. I believe he need to play in an attacking role possibly slightly behind someone leading the line. In this position he can beat the 1st (or even 2nd) player & then get a shot in on goal as he can deliver when he gets in the right position. So there.

is that not what chas just said?????????

Agree with FF for once, which is actually a miracle wouldn't you say! Drury is wasted out on the wing, and in my opinion doesn't look comfortable out there at all. If he was played in a more central role he would have more freedom, rather than being trapped down the wing. Playing Proths and Moussa down the wings with Jukebox in the centre would give us more goal scoring opportnities as Proths and Moussa can provide the decent crosses we need.

Also think Jukebox needs to get in the 18 yard box more during free kicks and corners rather than standing on the edge of the D waiting to mop up loose balls.

Make sense?

Ooh, missus, this is good. I am not saying play Juke box in a midfield four - I repeat that he should be floating behind the front two with a midfield three behind him e.g. Surey, Skipper McKimm and player of the year Saunders, full backs/wing backs pushing on for width. Just let Drury loose in the middle in a creative attacking role and let the midfield three work their magic behind him.

sorry but i have to disagree with the idea of 3 at the back FF, mainly on the grounds, that if your winger arn't good enough at gettin back then you get stuffed down the wing every time, especialy against a strong oppostion who can use their wings.

Also i felt that against Histon, Drury played well when he switched to the left side, getting down the wing well, mayby its not a case of not playing him on the wing, but which wing he plays on?

He's certainly stronger on the left and looks more comfortable. He does lack in pace, though, and recovery time (if or when he loses the ball, he's generally slower than most to backtrack and retrieve. Note the word 'generally', please). A middle to left sided attacking role with minimal defensive duties would suit him perfectly, even though the attacking formation as descibed in a previous post may leave our defence stretched. And where would Moose fit into this? His pace (and preferably the correct studs!) tear defences apart but his tackling is worse then Tostao's, which was appaling (!). The secret is to be able to change formation during the game as many times as necessary and utilise all the players' abilities, switching positions amd roles. That, however, takes practise and needs players training full time to perfect.

I say stick with a flexible 4-4-2 with Andy on the left. So endeth today's sermon, the moral being "What the hell is he going on about?"..........

A sort of Stonebridge Road version of Total Football, John? I like the sound of that.

This season has demonstrated that Jukebox has the potential to be an excellent attacking outlet either on the wing (e.g. his cross for Manny's goal on Saturday) or in a more central attacking midfield role (e.g. his pass for Moussa's winner against Stevenage). However, as many of us agree, consistency is still a problem. Given he has almost exclusively been played on the wing this season, with variable results, I'd see no harm in deploying him in a more central role as an experiment, and see where it leads us.
