Horsham 0-4 Margate

Once again it was two games for the price of one from Margate. The first, lasting for an hour, was a dour 0-0 draw with both sides struggling to cope with the heavy uneven pitch, and few chances at either end.

The second was a total demolition of the top-of-the-league team at their place, which was very enjoyable to watch.

No doubt proper reports will be posted elsewhere, so here are a few thoughts on the game to be getting on with.

It was never going to be pretty on that pitch. Both teams missed regular players through suspension, and also, in Horsham’s case, selling their star striker last week.

A lot of passes went astray during the first hour. In fact for a while in the first half possession was changing sides with almost every touch.

Horsham had a few chances in the first half, mostly sent wide and one saved by SCS (safe as houses).

Our chances were slightly better, with Pinnock shooting high three times, and Hock having one saved by the keeper. Best chance of all was a superb free kick by Jackson, which brought an outstanding save.

The home team had a penalty appeal turned down towards the end of the half from Westcott’s dive.

Second half began in much the same way, with nothing to indicate (to this supporter at least) what was about to happen. In fact, when Horsham had a pretty good penalty appeal turned down on the hour mark following a Trott mistake, I challenge any Gate fan to say they weren’t thinking it’s a definite nil-nil.

Then suddenly we were through and it all changed. Danny’s header was blocked on the line and the ball was fired in through a forest of legs by Abbott (I thought), though awarded to Jackson.

A couple of minutes later Jimmy added a second after good work on the left. Then it was Danny, and finally an OG after superb play by Abbo and Hockton.

Defensively we looked sound. Oates did well on the right. Sap and Trotty played well, Sap particularly so towards the end. You can see why the gaffer went to so much trouble to get him. I think we should make him MOM a couple of times to give him an incentive to stay.

Dean Standen coped well with their dangerous number 8, and fed Jacko well, although he doesn’t get forward as much as Skins. Jackson was subbed by Dolton, who impressed in the short time available.

On the right of midfield Abbott ran hard all game and worried their defenders. He is lucky the lenient ref decided against giving him a second yellow after the break.

In central midfield Proths seems to struggle a bit on the heavier pitches (eg against Staines), but McKimm was a giant today. Hardly put a foot wrong in my opinion and was probably the key that unlocked their defence during the second phase of the match.

Up front Pinns was as tireless as ever, but I do wish he would shoot on target a bit more. Danny was quiet in the first half, but made up for it in the second, scaring their defence to death, scoring one and assisting two others (Steve Watts, who’s he?).

Overall great stuff. We clearly have what it takes to win this league, but we have to be careful to concentrate for 90 minutes against the less fancied teams.

My MOM today would be Steve McKimm, just edging out Jimmy Jackson, though I might have said different if JJ had stayed on the pitch long enough to get his hat-trick.

A final word. I don’t think Horsham will even make the playoffs. If you wanted to go up that badly you wouldn’t sell your top goalscorer halfway through the season. I reckon they found out the cost of replacing their old wooden stand and said no thanks.

Good report, Chris. It was a very dull first half, and 0-0 written all over it, although we began to show ascendency at the close of the first half. We must have won the toss so played uphill in the first half with backs to the sun, and downhill in the second which was a help I think. Their penalty shout in the first was a dive, and correctly ignored by the ref, but they had a better shout in the second, could not see too clearly as I was behind the goal though. We came alive in the second half, and were soon on top. It was definitely JJ scored the first, ball crosses in, Danny's header on target, goalie fists out, Jimmy latches on to the rebound and hammers home through a sea of legs from about 12 yards out sweet as you like. JJ great header for the second, and likewise Danny for the third, but I swear it was Pinns for the fourth, not an OG as we heard on the radio. As I said, we were behind the goal, so saw it pretty well.

Greg and Deano had very good games, Abbo was excellent, most of our work was down that wing so he became quite a target for the oppo. Sappleton outstanding, as was McKimm, but all the lads played really well. I am amazed at how quickly Danny heals from injury, he was magnificent with his running in the second half. Pinns as usual like that too. Scotty safe as houses, yes.

Horsham play a bit hack and slash like Ramsgate so this was good practice for Boxing Day.

Horsham is a smashing little club with very tasty burgers and extremely nice supporters.

Nice report Chris 1 and MF. However I would just say that the ref was possibly the worst homer I have seen all season. He did not allow his linesmen to give a single decision without consulting him first. As he booked Abbo for shirt pulling then when JJ had his shirt pulled he should have booked thier player but did not even give a free kick.

Must say that after the first half I thought it would end 0-0 but what a pleasant suprise to win 0-4. We did not look like conceding at all and when they did break through there was PS to stop them. He won everything today. My MOM was Pat for the confidence that he gives everyone else with his assured play. Jay and Skins willfind it hard to get back in the team on Saturday.

Still not as funny as Alex's story though!

Good to see you cracked the 300 barrier today Rob, tho no doubt crowd was swelled by Margate fans as usual who couldn't get to see theit team play at Horsham.

My prediction was 4-1 (quite happy to lose the 1 bit). However as Horsham scored the fourth with an own goal, does this count in both columns - e.g. they did score a goal, and we won by 4 = a sort of 4-1 win, or am I clutching at straws here.

Anyway a blinding good win again! UP THE GATE!!!!!
