Manager Colin McBride named Jamie Richards, their recent signing from East Thurrock, in the starting line up for the first time. McBride spent the match watching from his perch on the roof of the stand, after receiving a six match ban and a £500 fine following a misunderstanding with the referee in a previous match. A tribute both to the manager and to the remarkable home fans came with the news that they had raised the money to pay for his fine.

 

Hendon had the unique experience of having more travelling flags than supporters on the terracing, whilst, following up from the free admission for all policy of last Tuesday, the official programme was reduced to just 50p for this match, and needless to say it sold out long before the start, whilst Trigger ensured that anyone who thought they had saved money in buying the programme also bought a 50-50 ticket, the winning prize being £120.

 

Hendon won the toss and Urchins kicked towards the restaurant end of the ground in the first half, making a slow start in the face of a strong north wind, but almost created a goal in their first attack, when Glozier played a long pass up to Kris Lee, who turned and fired in a hard shot which Page managed to block. Hendon, second in the league, came prepared to attack, Sam Collins running on to a free kick from Lubomir Guentchev and hitting his shot narrowly wide. In their next attack, Collins free kick was header powerfully away by John Mackie, but Collins played another high ball in from the left, and there was a massive clash of heads, between Casey MacLaren and Elliot Styles. MacLaren had his head heavily bandaged and was on his feet after five minutes, but Elliot needed a full ten minutes treatment before being helped up.

 

Ex-Hendon player Dean Green was brought down as he tried to break through and Tomlinson’s free kick found keeper Richard Wilmot in fine form, as he rose to save from Kris Lee. Alan Massey went close with another free kick, whilst Jamie Richards nearly found the net with his first touch of the ball, cracking a shot inches wide of the post after good work by Des Boateng, who had ran on to Tomlinson’s free kick.

 

It was Richards again, this time sending the ball in from the left to Tomlinson, who in turn touched back to Glozier and Danny’s cross resulted in a corner, which Boateng took and Wilmot saved well. Kris Lee to Boateng, who shot wide, and at the other end, Massey slammed a hard free kick into the wall, with Purdie and Mackie in full command at the back. Wilmot kept out another Boateng corner and Urchins began to force the pace, playing into the teeth of the strong north wind, which reduced the temperature to below freezing point. A Purdie free kick then found Richards who was tackled by Page as he went to shoot, whilst a Collins free kick for Hendon saw Mackie head away, but the ball went back promptly to Collins, whose shot brought a remarkable save from Brightley. Collins again, this time to Brian Haule, with Brightley again saving, whilst Davis Haule almost got onto the end of a MacLaren cross.

 

A Glozier free kick was played short to Kris Lee and back to Glozier, whose centre was well held by Wilmot, and Hendon came back strongly. Collins free kick finding Brian Haule, whose header brought another excellent save out of Dale Brightley. The only goal of the game came after a good build up involving Barnard, Glozier and Lee, who won a corner. Andy Tomlinson floated the ball over, keeper Wilmot could only punch the ball away as far as John Mackie, who played it quickly back and JAMIE RICHARDS pounced to slot the ball home.

 

However the Bitch described the goal somewhat more lucidly - The goal came via a corner, a bit of a scramble on the edge of the box, the ball falls to Richards, he pivots like a ballerina, controls his long legs, draws back and slams that bit of leather into the back of the net He retrieves his thong to the cheers of the crowd and the HX go in at half time 1-0 up

 

In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Hendon almost drew level, when a hard shot from the left was touched onto the post by Brightley. Incredibly the half time whistle went immediately afterwards, despite having well over ten minutes of stoppages in the first half.

 

The shop was packed solid, and there are now only a few scarves left unsold, whilst badges are going fast. Max dished out the £120 jackpot, but the main half time attraction is Jay’s new invention, hot chocolate filled with 50 percent all milk, served boiling hot for just 70p – such was the demand that stewards had to restore order. The main talking point was the disgraceful; anti-Hx letter published in the Rush Green Recorder, but fortunately the local paper did not have a reporter present today, otherwise he may have been on the receiving end of a few very pointed remarks.

 

Urchins kicked towards the windmill end in the second half, Green and Richards combining to send Boateng away, and his lobbed shot skimmed the bar. Mackie came up to join in the attack and he played the ball on to Kris Lee whose first time flick again skimmed the bar. Back came Hendon, Gretchen’s dangerous free kick being headed away by Mackie, and Guentchev then going close with another free kick, Brightley saving in spectacular fashion. Then Barnard made a long run on the right side, and was eventually halted by Leach. Kris Lee broke away on the left, cut inside and hit his shot across the face of the goal, whilst at the other end Collins won the ball from Glozier and saw his shot well saved by Brightley. Barnard and Lee combined again, but the centre was caught by Wilmot and a long upfield ball to Brian Haule saw the danger intercepted by the ever alert Mackie.

 

Mark Janney and Frankie Curley both came on, with Janney making an immediate impact, his long run on the wing being stopped by Leach. Tomlinson to Lee, and back to Glozier whose shot was blocked by Massey. Mackie and Styles interchanged passes to set up Lee, only for the ball to bobble and Kris mis-kicked, sending the ball wide of the goal. Hendon came back strongly, Mackie heading away a corner, and in so doing setting Lee up for a forward run, which in turn sent Richards clear, with Page tackling to concede a corner. Curley to Lee, and his cross was headed out by Burgess for a corner, which Janney took, and Curley went close with a header.

 

Such a cold day and vibrations are being felt all along the East side. Annie did her bit to keep the loyal support warm and the quiet Riverside are politely requesting her company. There was a massive crash on the roof of the stand but it is not certain if it was Colin expressing his opinion of the referee or Rob falling over his video stand.

 

Barnard set out on a good run and was chopped down by Massey, but play was allowed to continue and Janney ran on, his shot skimming the near post. Massey, with the impartial EastSide calling loudly for the referee to wave the red, was fortunate to escape with just a yellow. A Janney corner was headed out by Page, Richard Goddard created havoc in the goalmouth before Wilmot grabbed the loose ball, and Mackie headed over from Janney’s corner. In the final minutes Hendon staged a remarkable rally, and forced two corners, with Brightley saving well, but the final whistle must have been a relief to the referee, Mr Atkins, who was last over at the Bridge when he abandoned the Staines match.

Ex-Hendon player Dean Green was brought down as he tried to break through and Tomlinson’s free kick found keeper Richard Wilmot in fine form, as he rose to save from Kris Lee. The only goal of the game followed strong home pressure, but only after home keeper Dale Brightley had made two excellent saves, firstly from a hard drive from Sam Collins and then from Brian Haule’s header. The ball was played up field by Brightley and Donny Barnard ran on to force a corner. Andy Tomlinson floated the ball over, keeper Wilmot could only punch the ball away as far as John Mackie, Urchins’ recent signing from Brentford, and JAMIE RICHARDS pounced to slot the ball home.

 

With the temperature dropping in the second half, play swung from end to end, and both keepers were in constant action. Brightley made two excellent saves, from Guentchevs’ free kick, and then the home keeper was on hand to touch a shot from Collins against the post. Kris Lee, put through by Barnard, then fired over the bar, and Lee again broke clear, this time from Styles’ long pass, only for the ball to bobble badly as he prepared to shoot. In a frenzied last quarter, Hendon piled on the pressure, and twice went close to levelling the score, firstly from Davis Haule and then from Brian Haule. With Hendon concentrating on coming forward, Urchins took advantage to open up the away defence, with Mark Janney almost finding the net after a long run which started from inside his own half, and then Frankie Curley sent a good pass through to Richard Goddard, whose shot hit the side netting. Hendon forced two corners in stoppage time, John Mackie heading the first away and Dale Brightley clutching the second, under heavy pressure, as Urchins held out to take the three points. With good performances from both sides, the player of the match award went to Danny Glozier.
