FA CARLSBERG VASE First Round Proper

3-1 Bethnal Green United v Hoddesdon Town

Again from another's Forum

FA Vase : Bethnal Green United 3 Hoddesdon Town 1. Admission £6; Programme £1.50. Attendance 55 (hc)

I'd been dreading visiting the Mile End Stadium but to be honest, there's a lot worse. On a chilly day with milky sun, it didn't look too bad. The Runwell report was fine - 90 minutes to Central London and then an hour to do the last ten miles but not unexpected. In the car-park (£1) by 1.45 there was time to kill but with the walk to the nearest pub a mile away next to Mile End tube, there was only time for one, during which time the Dogs scored twice on the box. Oh well.

There's flat standing all round the stadium but with an 8-lane running track in between, it's not the greatest view. On one side however there's a decent stand with a good rake and I stood here to watch the second half and despite the distance it does give a good view. There's no clubhouse on site and refreshments are obtained from vending machines in the stadium foyer. Hoddesdon had brought a handful and they didn't seem too impressed. And not with what they saw on the pitch either as BGU proved much fitter, faster and stronger though some appalling defending didn't help.

I couldn't tell you what I expected score-wise as the 16-page programme made no reference to the match itself. It's the worst-value programme I've ever purchased. Black and white badly photocopied with 5 of those pages full of black and blacker photographs; on one, the only thing that could be made out was the stripy tie worn by a club official. No tables, results, penpics or, apart from the squads in the middle, no reference to who they were playing and what the competition was. I don't mind a [****!!****] programme. I mind being charged £1.50 for it.

Was on the line for this one.

Southend Manor just shaded it although Biggleswade United had enough of the play to have come away with something from the game.

I was wondering where you were yesterday, did you bring your bucket and spade. Southend Manor are flying in both the FA Cup and FA Vase aren't they.

Was tempted.

Southend Manor are doing very well in both competitions.

Watched one of their recent ties on the FA website and they looked impressive.

FA Vase Reports

A couple more from another's Forum

FA Vase 1st Round

Tring Athletic 3-2 Hullbridge Sports

Adm £5, prog £1 (not bad), burger £2.50 (v good), tea 50p (in a proper mug, good)

A glorious day of bright sunshine had Tring looking very pretty. Obviously very affluent but maybe not quite as pretentious as Berkhamsted just down the road where I was a few weeks back.

The car park is large but seems to be shared with parking for the adjacent rugby and squash clubs so even at just gone 2pm there were only a handful of spaces left. Being on the outskirts of town there isn't an abundance of side streets so most late arrival parked on the grass verge which led to some entertainment and close shaves at the end of the game.

Lots of friendly volunteers about the place. Tidy club house with a tea hatch at one end and a bar down one side which was advertising local beers. Sky on the box and lots of historical photos on the walls. An excellent home made stand, quite unique, though avoid the back row if you're more the 5ft 5 or so.

The game took a while to get going with the first 15 minutes or so a case of nothing quite coming off for either side. Hullbridge finally made the breakthrough when their ever-busy striker chased a lost cause which turned out to have a healthy back spin onit, holding it up near the goal line, and he somehow managed to score from a very tight angle. The home side then clicked into gear and equalised before half time.

The second half was more entertaining. Tring were generally the better side but Hullbridge always looked dangerous on the break, especially when they went to playing three up front on going 3-1 down. Tring's third had an element of controversy about it. A forward was clumsily tackled in the box with the usual howls for a penalty but since he only stumbled, regained his feet and still had the ball, there was a clear cry of play on from the ref. Play continued for several seconds as he dummied the keeper, took anouther couple of touches and finally slotted the ball back across from the far side of the goal...into the side netting. Whereupon the ref pointed to the spot. It seemed a very long time to have played the advantage AND then bring it back.

Hullbridge got a second goal about 10-15 from the end and it was then a very good game as they sensed they could get an equaliser while Tring realised they probably needed another to kill things off and couldn't rely on defending. The entertainment was prolonged by an injury to the ref meaning it was very nearly 5pm when the game ended. With just a few minutes to go, Hullbridge put a good move together, tore down the right, crossed the ball, the guy in the middle who was marked cleverly left it, just prodding it further wide to the totally unmarked no 9, 4 yards out, on his hat-trick, and he puts it 20ft over the bar.

The game was played in good spirits for the most part, only one nasty incident involving the away no 10 though that seemed to fizzle out quickly. Helped I think in part by the ref who, early on in the game, responded to several claims for free kicks over the slightest contact with a shout of "GERRRONNNWIIITHIIIT" which seemed to stop the moaning.

Southend Manor 2-1 Biggleswade United

FA Vase, admission £6, programme £1, coffee 50p (courtesy of Martin55), cherry and coconut cake 50p, att: 70

Straight forward train journey to Southend East station and then a short stroll through a quiet residential part of Southend to the Southchurch Park Arena. 3 separate Arena stands in a public park (2 seated) and a welcoming cafe/clubhouse selling mainstream mass produced alcoholic beverages, tea/coffee and some nice cake.

I was expecting to come here and see one of the teams that could possibly win the Vase this year after their recent FA Cup exploits. It was a pretty even game but 'Manor' deserved the win. They certainly need some rain in these parts as the pitch was very dry and the biting wind did not help matters either. So, I can't see Southend Manor winning the Vase this year, but you never know. Friendly club and an extrovert stadium announcer, who said no games from the Premier League were worth mentioning today in the half time and full time score bulletins. So for those of you in Southend who were unaware it was Aston Villa 1 West Bromwich Albion 2tongue.gif

Pre-match refreshments were taken in the Crosse Keys Wetherspoons conveniently situated on the walk between Bank underground and Fenchurch Street station. 24 handpumps, only 16 operating today (12 ales, 2 cider, 2 perry) as this part of London seems to go into shutdown at the weekend, even Pret A Manger was closed which is bizarre on a Saturday afternoon! I only had time for 1 though, Wharfebank's Treacle Toffee Stout. Post match refreshments taken in the Doric Arch at Euston, the Kelham Island Pale Rider was distinctly average.

Back in Stoke 25 minutes late which meant I only had a 5 minute wait for my train back to Longton.

Cost by train £47.30, cost to drive about £70.

I assume Southend Manor was a new ground for you, how did you travel there out of interest

Yes it was a new venue for me.

FA starred all 3 of us for joint travel so as to keep the expenses down.

I thought you might have got a train at Haringey Green Lanes to Barking and then caught one to Southend

That would have been one of a few options if I had to make my own way to the ground.

That would have been roughly £12 return dependant on what zone Oyster card you hold, how much were your expenses out of interest
