St Albans, Harpenden and Radlett are the nicest, and I've heard good things about Hertford too, although I've never been there.

Hemel should probably be number 1.

Brew, it's a matter of taste really. I like towns with character. WGC hasn't any. I blame the planners.

You could argue that it's not the layout that gives a town character, but it's inhabitants. I would argue that St.Albans has diminished in character as it has become more of a commuter city.

 

But all new towns suffer from a lack of 'history' that has helped formulate the character of many established towns.

As a suggestion, you could mark the pubs in St albans out of 10 to find out which are best. Naturally rules need to be made, such as a minumum of 3 people to mark a pub, points judged on choice of drink, how nice bar staff are/actual pub is, if outside seating, etc.

The west side of WGC is great, leafy suburbs and large detached houses, but as soon as you reach the town centre is goes rapidly downhill. It may have been quite pleasant in the 60's but the overdevelopment of cheap housing has encourageed the decline (imho).

Come on - Hitchin has a cute Square and charming back streets and a real Market, not to mention many pubs and cheaper houses !

 

I know shame about the football team but at least you can get back to St. Albans before closing time.

 

On the whole even the worse places in Hertfordshire are great compared to the sh*thole that is London - guess I'm just a country boy at heart.

Yeah, guess I was judging the place on the morons who turned up at Clarence Park thinking they were going to win the league after winning two games in August. As a Saints fan you are excluded from any generalised slagging off of the town of course.
