If anyone actually cares about quantum mechanics and the nature of "reality" (which is what Cyclops was on about, as if you didn't know) try here:

if you just like dead cats, or 101 uses for them, try here:

I like to be useful.

Is the cat called Schrodinger or is that just the name of the guy with the handbag? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Schrodinger was the one in danger of getting his eyes scratched out if the cat ever found out what he was up to. It (the cat) should actually have been in a steel container which nothing can enter or leave rather than a bag, but it appears to be on tour!

i read the first line and closed the window; how cruel!! all i got up to was 'cat placed in box.. poisnous gas...'

ahhh poor thing. all this from a cat; depending on size, weather it could / has / will be let out of the bag / depending on the state of the cat and how or if hte bag is sealed.

stop being sad and very cruel. take it neither of u have pet cats..?

Junior,

It was a "thought experiment" and never could carried out (the system would have to be sealed in such a way that no cat could live in it anyway). Schrodinger did a lot to develop quantum mechanics but he appears to have got a bit peed off with those people who took his ideas too literally, hence the cat in the box which was meant to show that you can never really be sure of anything because nobody has told you the full story.

The two possible results are that the cat stops being either dead or alive and becomes one of the two only when there has been some form of interaction from outside, such as a person observing the cat and the vial of gas (the Copenhagen Interpretation); or that both eventualities are played out (the Many Worlds Interpretation).

This second interpretation is what Terry Pratchett is talking about in Discworld books when he goes on about going down the wrong leg of the trousers of time. If it were true the result would not be possible because at every point in time the observer could open the box and the cat could either die or carry on living, or wait a bit longer leaving the actual state of the cat unknown. So you would have an infinite number of live cats plus an infinite number of dead ones plus an infinite number of cats whose exact state (alive or dead) cannot be specified because they are in an infinite number of unopened boxes.

If you've ever wondered why Students' Unions have bars, now you know!

Look you are all wrong.

"Letting the cat out of the bag" is another expression derived from the navy. The cat was the "Cat of nine tails" a knotted rope which was kept in a bag. When the cat comes out of the bag then someone is in for a flogging.

It has nothing to do with a dead or a live cat.
