ref's and Lino's

I am an ex-referee. Not the greatest of standards my only "major game" was a friendly between Enfield Reserves and Chace Old Boys. Referee's and assistants have just one chance to make up their minds. This is could be timed in hundreths of a second. I would say that 99% of the time they get it right.

Someone said why don't the assistants flag. This depends on the instructions the referee gives them before the start of game. With me this is what I said:-

1. Left wings first half, straight across for the second.

2. Throw Ins;- You take the feet I'll take the hands.

3. Offside yours all the time. Any free kicks near goal, I'll take the goal line.

4. Fouls - give me first bite. If you see something give me a flag and direction you want it. If it is indirect raise your hand.

5. Penalties - if you see an infringement which is a penalty, give me the flag across the chest.

Come round and take the goal line. I'll take the straying into the box.

6. Don't stand any nonsense. If a player is a bit lippy, tell him to "button it." If keeps it up raise your flag and I'll come over and deal with it. If you want further action tell me and I'll back you.

7. Apart from these have good game.

These were my instructions I gave to my linesman (refs assistants) when I had them. Most referees will do the same. It is enjoyable most of the time but you do get those games when all hell breaks loose and you wish you were back home in front of the fire. If it was a Sunday morning back in bed.

One thing that is very noticable in the ESL is how many referees assistants look at the ref, wait for the decision, and then raise their flag in agreement. If these people cannot have their own opinion, there is not much point in being there. They are not there to agree with the ref when they often have a better view. Are they afraid to contradict the ref?

The commonly used word 'lino' has now been replaced by assistant referee. That is correct because it is my view that the lino should flag for any thing he sees and act as a referee. The ref should then decide whether he wants to take notice of the flag or not. The idea that an assistant referee should only get involved in certain aspects of refereeing a game at the ref's request is ludicrous. The muppet we had against Sawbo on Saturday was the same muppet we had against Abbey. He would only flag if the referee let him. What a joke!

Hey guys, read enfieldsnr's post, especially point 4. This is what referees invariably instruct their assistants to do. For throw-ins in the assistant's half, the ref will go with him. For fould, unless the incident is right in front of him, or if he believes he has a better angle than the ref, the assistant is asked to glance quickly at the ref to see if he has indicated anything. Very often the ref is aware of the possibility of an incident and might give a little private signal to his assistant that he wants to play on. There wil be all sorts of little signals and codes between the officials that the crowd are unaware of.

The reason for this is to avoid total confusion with an assistant constantly flagging and being over-ruled.

However, as you all know so much about it and are such good potential officials, I trust you will all be signing up to referee's cpurse in the nearfuture and making your talents available to the game!

I just think if the assistant referee sees something then he should flag. It is then down to the ref to decide whether to take notice or to ignore. If the ref choses to ignore then a clear signal should be given to this effect so that players, officials and fans know that this is the case. Simple really!

That's basically what happens! It is ALWAYS the ref's final decision of course, the little technoiques I warbled on about are just practical ways to do it.

The assistant will always flag if he believes he/she has seen an infringement that the ref has not. In most csaes the ref will be better placed though.

Clealrly, if the assistant's flag is going up and down like a randy rabbit then neither players nor spectators will know what's going on and all hell will break loose. I can just see the forum the next day - full of "the assistant flagged but the ref ignored him so we wuz robbed".

They do actually try to work these things out, you know!

If we didn't moan about the officials then we would all realise how bad our teams really are and not go to the next game, So keep it up everyone they deserve it.
