Do we really need a new striker?

It has been mentioned on here hundreds of times that we need a "20 a season" striker.

What we are really saying is, "we need someone who is going to create 20 goals for himself"!!

Manny and Roy are good players, and both are capable of scoring lots of goals. If they are provided with the opportunities to do so.

Today, how many chances were created for the pair?

It seems at the moment, that if a striker is to score he has to create the chance himself.

The problem...the MIDFIELD!!

Our central midfield do not link up with the strikers at all, and give the ball away continuously.

Therefore, instead of pleading for a new striker, should we not be asking for a midfield player who can 1) Keep the ball, 2) Has the ability to pass to a player in his own team, and 3) SETS UP THE STRIKERS!!

Then and if the strikers are missing chances, then ask for a 20 a season striker!

It would be nice to have back up, but that isn't my main concern.

So, imagine we signed Ruud Van Nistelroy tomorrow.....how many goals would he score for us?

I wouldn't have thought to many. Someone has got to create the chances for someone to finish them off!!

Do we really need a new striker?

No, we need two.

When things started going wrong at the back, Andy was quick enough (quite rightly) to rectify it by signing Pullen, Pops, Macca and Bunce, losing Mitts, Shearer and Mooro.

Today we were undone by a very classy forward pair who will score against ANY defence in the Conference, and probably in Div 2.

Losing was no disgrace.

BUT, for months now we have not looked like scoring.

We only have 2 recognised strikers, and without having the figures to hand Roy and Manny have only scored about 13 goals in about 35 games between them. A terrible return. At this rate they will be lucky to get 10 each this term.

Andy has already shown he is prepaered to clear the decks and get new faces in to resolve problems.

What we need to do is to part company with those players who are either too injury prone or too slow for the Conference, which will free up money for a couple of new strikers.

You can argue that strikers do not grow on trees, but we had no apparent difficulty in replacing 60% of our defence over a 3/4 week period. I have no doubt the players ARE out there, albeit at a price.

But if a couple of strikers on £500 per week each start knocking the goals in, and we get some wins under our belts, the crowds will return.

100 extra adults on the gate would pay their wages.

Food for though? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

And if that doesn't work, the club's finances are at risk. Speculating to accumulate in our financial position isn't really a great idea, in my view.

People have said in other threads that we only created 3 chances in the whole of yesterdays game, including the goal. I can't remember there being that many.

But who's fault is it that we only created three?

The midfield!

Exactly and whose our most creative midfielder?

Nobody answer I want to wait for Fleetbabe to do it.

You called on me to answer this question, so I will. You have to agree we missed the dominance of Macca in the middle on Saturday, and we also missed the skills of Jukebox on the wing. Jukebox is a creative player, and although they tried on saturday, Proths, then Moussa couldn't really do much. It doesn't help that majority of the clubs in this league know that moussa has pace, and therefore make every attempt possible to cut him off.

Jukebox can create the play, and it's unfortunate for him that the man we have to call a striker, (who I hasten to add hasn't scored for 3 months), can't seem to put the ball in the right place at the moment. If we had a decent striker, who can combine well with manny, then there really wouldn't be a problem with the transition of the ball from the midfield to the front two.

Everyone puts the midfield down, especially Jukebox, but surely it's about time we stopped moaning at them during the game, and begin getting on the back of the "donkey" we have the unfortunate pleasure of witnessing play in the starting 11 every week up front. I think you know who I'm on about. Glad he was subbed on saturday, maybe he'll see now that he actually needs to start doing something to keep his place in the team.

Andy Drury is our most talented player in the team, Macca wouldnt have put him in his all time x1 if he didnt think he was really talented. This player has football league talent, which probably means he'll be sold to Aldershot in the summer ! As for Roy, fleetbabe, always maintained he's a one trick pony, can head the ball and thats all he can do, but Andy F. likes that sort of target man.

Essandoh needs the right sort of service to thrive and I feel the team are not providing this. We need good quality crosses for Essandoh to get on the end of to either a) score or B) set up opportunities for others. The 4-4-2 system that Andy Ford seems to prefer is solid, but I feel from having watched the team this season that the two strikers (Essandoh and A.N.Other) play too far apart. We need to play to our strengths if we can. I will keep quiet now!!!!

No player who was a " one trick pony" would be able to score a goal like that at home to Exeter. Yes,he is better in the air and perhaps he isn't so good with shots, but if you discriminated against all players on this basis Everton would never play Duncan Ferusson would they? Name a better header of the ball in our present side than Roy!

Although good the goal against Exeter was hit and hope, he'd never repeat it.

Roy has played best when he stays in the centre instead of wandering out wide and when the supply is good.

He is indeed a one trick pony but one who has been good enough to score a decent amount of Conference goals.

Calling him a donkey does him no good, fleetbabe you are a tad hypocritical- people can't say Drury had a poor game without you kicking off about it but you can label Roy as a donkey? Double standards.

If people are getting on his back, then why aren't they getting on Pinnock's? At least Roy has chances...

Probably because Pinnock's in and out of the side and it's debatable whether he's really a striker, while Roy, in the team pretty much every week, hasn't scored since the Exeter game.

Sorry Jimmy, but Roy is a terrible player, and has been since his goal drought started. if, and I say if, he scores again, he may regain his form, but he's not the best player in the team.

he needs to be taken out of the team, to allow him to realise that he is not invincible, and that he actually has to work to keep his place in the starting 11, like everyone else.

As for Jukebox, he is, as numerous people have said, one of our most creative players. Without him in the midfield, as we saw on saturday, we provided a very lack lustre performance, creating very little down the wings. The sooner his ankle gets bettet, the better it will be for the team.

If essandoh decided to make the runs when the service is provided, we wouldn't have so much of a problem. Answer me this, how many balls did he let go through to the keeper on saturday without making much of an effort to chase? Oh, and he needs to hassle the keeper more, put them under a bit more pressure, rather than backing off.
