Nick played for Brook House yesterday, Gareth is also training at Brook House but if it does not work out will possibly try another SML Club. Matt Plaskett Reserve team player of the year played for Leverstock against Brook House and did not look out of place. Frankie has gone to Chalfont with Ray Walsh, Toddy and Cooper, not sure where Steve Carr has gone, possibly Chalfont Steve Flower has signed for Harefield.

Will I know anyone next season!! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

AWK, great post earlier on, thanks, hopefully someone can cover Division 1 as Manorborn suggests, trust Kevin to be a kill joy but take his point about Abramovitch who is clearly living on borrowed time. It seems that none of the teams in Division 2 have floodlights so can't go anywhere no matter how many times they win the league, this must be a bit demoralising for the likes of Aston Clinton, Crawley Green and AFC Dunstable. Can't understand what happened to Padbury last season, the season before they were on fire and I witnessed them beating Haringey Borough 2-1 at Coles Park in the Challenge Trophy, an old fashioned cup shock if ever there was one and I think they took another Premier or First Division scalp too in a run of Chesterfield and Wycombe Wanderers proportions.

Piotr Malecki, there you go Kevin.

Top stuff Cliff.

I see he has a Polish Christian name as well...must be a proper Polak. Mind you if Manor start to play like the national team did in WC2006 and for that matter WC2002 we could be in trouble

Cheers Rhodes, you are right that none of the teams in Division Two have floodlights. That is the reason the three teams you mentioned, Crawley Green, AFC Dunstable and Aston Clinton have failed to win promotion and also why 61 FC, Pitstone and Kings Langley had got relegated a couple of seasons ago. On the flip side Amersham and Cranfield United, while suffering poor seasons got promoted due to there facilities in the same period.

61 FC were looking at floodlight 2/3 seasons ago but with new guidlines coming out over the standard of grounds at step 6 it was considered a waste of time as there was no way that they could enclose the ground etc on what is a public playing field. There was even a worry that our time left in the SSML was running out, but it seems that we can stay in Div 2, especially as three clubs with similar lack of facilities joined last season. Though personally im not keen on a closed league with no relegation or promotion but you want to play at the highest level you can reach and at the moment thats SSML Division 2.

Thanks AWK, excellent views as ever, you certainly know your stuff. Just want to pick Lato up on the Polish National side if I may, how come you didn't kick on from your hugely successful side of the 70's as you could have been a World football power by now to rival Italy, France, Germany and er England. Those players from the 70's still trip off the tongue as if it were yesterday, your namesake, Jerzy Gorgon, the old fashioned blonde stopper centre back, Gadocha, Lubanski, Kazzy Denya and 'the clown' in goal, never forget when you beat England 2-0 in Katowiche when Bobby Moore had that rare stinker.

Interesting question Cliff, I'll put it to the guys I go to Poland games with and see what they think. My view is that Gorski the coach in 74 was a genius and his succesors never quite lived up to him. Also the infrastructure just wasn't there on a long term scale in a Communist country particularly one like Poland. The players you mentioned were also all growing old together reaching their peak around 1974. Sadly they all played on a little too long together and virtually the same side didn't do as well in 1978 though they still reached the second phase. The new breed coming up (Zbigniew Boniek apart) just weren't as good as there was little or no investment in the clubs and coaching. Boniek literally carried the team by himself to third place in 1982 aided by a last great hurrah from Lato and a no nonsense, 'take no prisoners' defensive attitude. With the best players then going abroad to earn a living things got even worse as the Polish league standard dropped while the players who did play overseas (Jackie Dziekanowski at Celtic for instance) often refused to play for the national side. Consequently they often did not get called up for the national squad It was only around 2000 that things picked up when Jerzy Engel became national coach and he insisted on be given a free rein by the previously all powerful and some may say corrupt Polish FA to pick who he wanted based solely on football talent.Alas Engel having qualified superbly for WC2002 bricked it in the finals and the team flopped. Boniek then had a disatrous go (even my limited Polish knew he was being called all manner of obscenities as the team struggled to 2-0 win over an appalling San Marino side employing a 10-0-0 formation. Pawal Janas took over and made exactly the same mistakes as Engel when it came to WC2006 by changing formations and dropping key players. Now we have Leo Beenhakker in charge it will be interesting to see what happens for EC2008 as we have evereyones favourite side Portugal, Serbia and Belgium in our group (as well as Armenia, Azerbaijan and Kazahkstan)

Lato - wish I hadn't asked, no thanks for the interesting view. Yes since 1973 and the infamous win at Wembley Stadium Poland have always been at the back of people's minds but have never really delivered since the 1974 World Cup which is a pity. There have been plenty of meetings between us and you since 1974 but none that have really stuck in the memory apart from maybe the 3-0 in Mexico 1986 when Linnekar got the hat trick. You certainly know your stuff on Polish football, well impressed.

Poland drew at Wembley, Cliff. Our only ever win over England was the 'Booby Moore howler' in Katowice you mentioned.

We actually played better at Wembley in 1996 when we lost 2-1 than in 73.

Thanks for correcting me Lato, obviously I meant draw following the Allan Clarke spot kick and as you say England were terrible in the 2-0 defeat in Katowice. Incidentally I heard from Frank today that it is almost definite we (Kentish Town)are coming to Grosvenor Vale for a pre season friendly on 3 August so hopefully see you, Steve and George then, don't forget mine's a pint of Stella and I prefer ham sandwiches to cheese if that's okay.

Good stuff Cliff.

I don't have any say over the boardroom catering but a pint of lager should be manageable post match.

Cheese is for mice.
Can I come please? I'll give the food a miss - pint of Boddies, IPA Caffreys or the like will do, followed by another and another.....

Don't like this thread now - totally gone over my head.
Wish I knew more about your league but being an Essex girl never got involved!!
I'll have to start doing some research!!

You enjoy winding up Paula don't you Coupwotcoup, there is not much that goes over her head as she is quite tall for a girl sorry Woman and Paula is all Woman take my word for it. Paula there is a thread on here, can't remember which one, that details all the teams in the SSML Premier Division and rates their chances for the season, most of our teams are located in Hertfordshire Bedfordsire, Buckinghamshire, a couple in Middlesex and one in London, in Tottenham actually but I don't mention them, none in Essex I'm afraid.
