BOREHAM WOOD 2 HORNCHURCH 1

It all went wrong before the start – Andy Tomlinson received a slight injury and could not play, late notification meant that Frank Curley had to be withdrawn due to his one match suspension, Harry Elmes unwell – net result, only three substitutes. It continued to go wrong when the referee decided that Urchins blue and white stripes clashed with the home club’s all white, and Urchins turned out in their ESC final kit of dark red with black edgings, but still wore white shorts and sky blue socks. It continued to go wrong when it was discovered that the referee was the one who took the Northwood match. The referee’s assessor was in the stand and filled up his entire book, used up all his pens and did not look any too happy.

On the bright side, Mr Entertainment, George Borg, was right in front of the away directors – and he did not disappoint. A bright sunny day but a with a 20 mph wind blowing diagonally across the pitch. Urchins started well, Brothers taking a long throw which Goddard headed on, and Barber cleared. Parker, back again after his school trip, found Barnard whose run towards goal was halted by Fenton’s tackle. Styles made a good run on the left, played inside to Parker, whose neat touch on towards Lee was intercepted by Williams. Urchins continued to attack and two successive fouls, both right on the edge of, or inside the area, were missed by the referee . Glozier made ground on the left and slotted through to Lee, who was tackled by Adedeji for the first corner of the match. Brothers sent the kick long into the goalmouth and Horton punched away, Bangura completing the clearance. Green to Lee once again and another corner, Brothers again sending the ball long into the goalmouth where Fenton headed away, but back to Brothers whose centre was punched away by Horton. Green won the third corner of the match, Horton dealing with this one in the same way as the other two.

Until now, Wood had done nothing, and continued to do nothing until the referee awarded them a free kick ten yards outside the area. Nothing wrong with the decision except that there was no foul and it was not a free kick. From high up in the stand it seemed a shot on goal was inevitable but the home team all clustered out on the left side of the area, as if for a centre, and Urchins only had a nominal two players in the wall. Samuel shaped to take the kick, and DANNY BARBER instead stepped up to hammer the ball into the net for what can only be described as a very soft goal. This was the only time in the entire match that George Borg failed to comment on a refereeing error.

We now had a most unusual phenomenon – the home side had only one supporter who was making any noise, and that was our George. A long Brothers throw found Lee, who headed over, and a Brothers free kick, hotly disputed by Wood’s lone supporter, was hit high over the top. Brothers with another long throw found Parker , who was dispossessed and the ball played quickly up to Archer who made a direct run at goal, Purdie just getting in his tackle in time to prevent a one on one with the keeper. A Glozier free kick out on the left saw Lee glance his header narrowly over the bar, and Barnard was brought down by Bangura, who was lucky to get away with just a yellow card. A minute later, the referee evened it up when he booked Dean Green whose only offence appeared to be that he had cleared the ball upfield. Wood rarely came forward but they found some space up front thanks to Watters who played an excellent ball up to Thomas who raced goalwards, and he tried to lob Brightly, who, outside his area, managed to chest the ball away to Purdie to completed the clearance.

George Borg jumped up – well, in fact he had never sat down – looked directly at the referee’s assessor, and called ‘are you the assessor’. Back came the answer ‘yes’, to which George replied ‘thank Christ for that’ (rest of the comment is censored). Wales picked out Bangura with a neat through pass and Brightly saved well. a Green centre was headed wide by Brothers, although a corner was awarded – ‘if they score from this, I’ll get the hump’, called out George to the linesman. Urchins did not score, so George remained happy(ish). Close to half time a Parker shot rebounded to Green whose return cross went just behind.

At half time the wind doubled in intensity and turned through ninety degrees, with the result that Urchins were now playing into a gale. One way traffic as Urchins dominated and powered forward incessantly. Barnard sent a long ball on to Parker, but Barber recovered well to tackle. Glozier’s free kick was punched away by Horton and the ball was hacked upfield to Thomas, forcing Brightly to rush way outside his area to kick clear. Brothers went to take a long throw, but threw the ball back to Glozier who crossed into the centre where Boateng headed just over the bar. With the home goal under siege, Barnard played a pass low to Parker, whose shot cannoned out for a corner. Brothers floated the ball over, had it promptly hit out for a throw, which Brothers tossed towards the goal, the ball was headed on, and KRIS LEE hammered the ball home, to the delight of almost the entire ground, the announcer awarding the goal to Michael Brothers.

And so on to comedy time, when the sole Boreham Wood supporter stood up and loudly berated George Borg for what he called ‘continual disgusting behaviour; which was upsetting the kids. George replied as only George can, but the supporter had got it completely wrong – the kids were loving every second of it. In a rare Wood attack, Purdie cleared, with our George furious at what he considered to be a clear cut case of hand ball, and when the linesman wrongly awarded two throw ins in succession, George strode up to the linesman, and patted him on the back when he got the next one right.

Purdie was booked for looking at the referee and Richards came on for Brothers, and Jamie was soon in action taking a cross from Green and winning a corner, which Richards took and Adedeji headed away. A Barnard free kick then almost went wrong when the ball was booted back upfield and Watters opened up the play by sending a cross field pass to Samuel, whose cross cum shot brought saw Brightly make an excellent save. Barnard then played a good pass towards Lee, whose shot was blocked by Fenton, and a Glozier free kick saw Richards head the ball back to Lee, whose own header was saved at full stretch by the overworked Horton, who managed to tip the ball around the post. Richard took the corner and Goddard headed on, ran forward, and then hit his shot over the bar. Barnard’s free kick found Parker, whose shot was deflected for a corner, and Richards sent the ball over, to Green, whose shot was scrambled off the line and Styles followed up to touch the ball on to Boateng, and thence to Green again, with Horton touching the shot over the bar. Richards took the corner once again, Parker played on to Goddard, who hit his shot wide of the post. A long Boateng throw found Parker, on to Lee and on again to Barnard who was hacked down. Two bookings followed, and the free kick was eventually taken, the ball behind hit too high and over the bar.

Purdie came to the rescue when a long clearance found Thomas unmarked, and then it was Parker who took up the running, winning yet another corner, Richards playing the ball short to Glozier, whose cross into the middle was met by Kris Lee, whose own header somehow drifted wide of the goal, when a goal looked a certainty. And so on to the mugging, as Unc called it. Barber had played a pass out to Bangura, having caught Parker in possession, and the ball went on to Archer who shot high and wide. The goal kick appeared to set up yet another Urchins attack, but Samuel intercepted, played the ball out to the right wing, where far too much ground was made without anyone getting in a tackle, Archer sent the ball over low and an unmarked CHRIS BANGURA gleefully slotted home.

With George Borg incessantly calling for time, the referee, with Urchins still pressing hard, decided to end it several minutes early, having only allowed two minutes for the many stoppages, and Urchins went off pointless, whilst the referee went off blissfully unaware of the look on the face of the match assessor.

Another great report.

Just as a matter of interest Dagger...how do you retain so much detail and still get to watch the game?

A serious question as my brother is the President of a local rugby union club and I showed him your match reports and he wants something similar for their games on their website.

Thanks

Mick

Attendance – estimated at 200 mostly from Hornchurch but no Lawrence

Official statistics says 162.Not a great crowd for a Ryman Prem game.Borehamwood must have no support at all...

there were easily 300 people in that ground yesterday but I have to say that the way into the ground is hardly policed....you can just walk in through several different entrances....great place tho and excellent hospitality as always from danny and his gang..

i paid to get in but i was outside having a fag before the game when i heard a chappie talking to his bird saying "i am going in through the back entrance" and off they dissapeared to the toilets.

I assumed they were going in on the cheap but they came out of the toilets a few minutes later so i guess the back entrance was blocked and they had to find another way in.I must say though the bloke smelt of sh1t when he came out of the toilet though!
