FA Vase

Dorking 0-2 Chertsey

Dorking had their chances but just didn't finish.

I was quite impressed with Chertsey, or at least two or three of their players.

Pennies, (Pounds ?), well spent ????? :coffee (2):

Horley Town 1 Croydon 1

I've seen the Trams three times this season, once in August (v Ash), once in September (v North Greeenford), and now once in October. I've seen 34 different players in Croydon shirts over those 3 games!!! Not exactly the most stable of starts to a season!

The good news was that at least there was only 1 change from the previous week's game against Dorking, and that this set of youngsters shows a lot more promise than the previous incarnations this season. :)

Thoroughly deserved draw, although I thought Horley would have offered a bit more than they did, given their unbeaten start to the league campaign. We had the better of the first half, Horley had the better of the second, but neither side created many chances. Frustratingly though, for the second match in a row, we were denied all 3 points by the woodwork in injury time

I was down at Horley's ground Sunday afternoon, (to watch the Horley Ladies Reserves notch up a 5-2 win against Meadow Sports of Woking).

There was quite a discussion in the bar afterwards with some of the Horley team, and they admit that their performance was far below par for them.

I must admit their pitch looks good after this dry weather. Still - A least we've got some rain now.

Dorking welcomed a strong Chertsey Town side to Meadowbank on Saturday in the first round of the FA Vase, Chicks having secured the right to play Chertsey following their 4-2 victory in the previous round against Sussex league side Lancing.

Dorking were without Joe Loyza through suspension while new signing from Merstham Zak Graham was unavailable.

Chertsey have had a good start to the season to confirm their status as one of the leading teams in the division, and judging by their overall play could well have a good run in the FA Vase this season if future draws are kind to the Surrey club.

Dorking manager Tony Webb felt after the game his team played well but despite plenty of possession in what turned into a midfield battle, were unable really to seriously threaten the Chertsey goal on a consistent basis in what was an even game.

Dorking started well with both teams trying to play football on a very dry, hard pitch. Neither side put their opposing goalkeeper under much pressure, but it was Chertsey who drew first blood on 30 minutes. A quick free kick was delivered into the box and Chertsey striker Pomroy placed a header into the far top corner beyond the diving Dan Coote. Dorking then created 3 good chanes towards the end of the half with Phil Page having two chances and James White miising a 1-1 in the last couple of minutes of the half.

At half time, Dorking were well in the game, with the next goal being crucial in the contest as once more the game settled into a midfield battle. Neither side was able to take the game by the scruff of the neck, with Chertsey perhaps always looking the more business like in attack, and so it proved when the game was settled in the second half as Chertsey scored at the near post from a corner with 13 minutes to go.

The game then petered out despite a number of substitutions from Webb including young RyanAugustine, son of Dorking coach Peter Augustine, with Chertsey shutting up shop to see the tie go with the form book.

Dorking now face three league games in just over a week. On Tuesday 6 October Chicks travel to Merland Rise to play Banstead, on Saturday 10 October Dorking play Hanworth Villa again away before yet another away game at unbeaten Horley Town on Tuesday 13 October.
