FA Cup gates......

Recommended Posts

Have you ever noticed that when any of our teams got to a proper round of the cup, played someone big at home, got a huge crowd in (fair enough could be a massive piece of history if your teams wins) and then when you get knocked out, the large crowd and so called supporters never return? Has anyone actually had these glory hunters stay on "supporting" the team for good?

its not quite as simple as that is it......

there will always be 'floating' football fans that will be attracted to a 'high profile' game in one of the more important cup competitions....

bit like 'non pop concert' people going to see rod stewart or elton john because the very nature of those events appealed to them for a night out....whats the difference between pop fans and footie fans....it is after all the same industry....

the entertainment industry...

surely we must accept this and use these brief opportunities to try and 'sell' our clubs to these visitors and recruit them to the cause....

I see nothing wrong with these football supporters coming to high profile games...to brand them as 'glory hunters' surely does our clubs little favour in our combined efforts to increase gates.....

for every 100 extra fans at high profile games we surely have the opportunity to convert 20 to the cause....

their gate money is welcome too......

It's a fascinating subject this.

The aspect of "loyalty" when applied to football supporters is really intriguing.

As you say...no one questions your loyalty if you don't attend every Rod Stewart concert...or if you change from Sainsbury to Tesco...but with football supporting there is an added pressure - whether imagined or real.

Tommy Boyd - the ol' Magpie presenter, and pinko nightime ex-Talk Sport presenter used to have a strange [but reasonable] rationale on the subject.

He stopped supporting Fulham [i think] because he felt disenfranchised with the club and "let down" by them...and so began supporting Pompey instead.

He used to get slagged off something chronic... [and I must admit, I couldn't do it]...but when he questioned his detractors on why he should be "ashamed" to have transfered his loyalty, no one could give him a reason, apart from an emotive one.

I hate glory hunters, but you're right...regular supporters may be made from them.

Same here CANV. Brighton was my first game and after that I watched Canvey several times a season before going regularly from 1999.

That's fine, and I commend you for staying loyal. Even though you have a lot to be loyal about! But when Bedford played Peterborough United in the cup, it was a huge game for us "every-weekers" and for the town of Bedford, and we had 2,600 there. There was a "supposed" BTFC supporter and he was clad in the blue and white and cheering and everything...great....still no problem...but then since the 01/02 season I have never seen him at the New Eyrie, and my mates who are egg chasers have seen him at the local rugby club, who have eclipsed us for a decade. I think this is not right and he's not the only one. I only brought it up, because crowds seem to be dwindling in this league. Here's to crowds improving in Conference 2.

Last season Salisbury City made it to the first round proper andwere rewarded with a tie against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough. At the time home crowds averaged around 550. Salisbury took nearly 2000 to Hilsborough after they lost to Sheffield home crowds were still in the region of 550, I'd love to know where the other 1450 or so, so called supporters went.

I was there and there was a crowd of blokes behind me who had to ask which team Salsibury where when th eteams came out on to the pitch!!!!

First time i ever went to see Billericay Town was when we got to the first round proper playing Wisbech Town. I was only 13 or so and knew nothing about non league footer. I hardly even knew football existed below the conference, let alone that Billericay had a team. A mate mentioned it to me, we went along and i loved it so much that i went to every home game for the rest of that season in the Ryman 1st plus a few away games. Ive pretty much been a regular since, although interrupted by goign to uni.

It frustrates me to know that if we have a big game then the crowd is going to be big, and then most of them will disappear afterwards, but i guess you can take satisfaction that its helped to raise the profile of the club, and there may be a few people like me who get hooked on it and keep going

Just to tell you slough fans that we are going to beat the pants off you in the cup.I dont reckon clubs like you (without grounds) should be allowed in this prestigious competition and that embarassing clubs like yourselves should automaticly be put in ryman 2.What a larf seeing enfield there and you lot'll be there soon enough. We have got the ryman prem sewn up already and are the best team in our area and you lot go cap in hand to garbage like winsor & eton. I predict 3-0 to the cheshunt boys. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/boxing.gif" alt="" />

Tell us, Amber Knickers,

When was the last time that a team at the head of the table after this many games actually won the league? You'll have a bad patch, as most teams do, and don't expect too much sympathy when it happens. We might even laugh!

Also - serious question as I don't know - what have Cheshunt ever won?
