Enfield Town v Wingate & Finchley

Probably fair result… thankfully W&F made the age old mistake of trying to defend a two goal lead which led to us dominating the second half…. wasn’t close enough to see if the penalty was harsh but the space given to their forward for the second was poor…. we had two good chances but both ended up in Southbury road which isn’t the managers fault… Good to see a few changes but for all the managers faults he can’t actually pass the ball for the players and some of the passing was Sunday league stuff….enjoyable afternoon all in all ….

A quality game of football from both sides which we definitely edged in terms of chances created, but W&F deserved their point by being clinical in the first half.

Credit to the manager for changing formation (and the starting line up)  because anybody who watched the Kingstonian match knew that something needed to change. Taaffe, Youngs and Alves in midfield all had good games, as did Tanner at left CB. He has good vision and hits accurate passes - a definite upgrade. Also very good to see us return to playing a passing game and using (not bypassing) the midfield.

I was stood behind our goal in the first half so too far away to comment on their penalty other than to say we have conceded a lot of sloppy (unlucky?) penalties of late. At 0-1 down, I made it that Wyllie had 4 chances and Hippolyte 1 chance to equalise so the sucker punch just before half time was a real kicker. It looked like we gave the W&F player too much space, then Mackenzie slipped, but credit to their forward for taking the chance. 0-2 down at half time but we really should have been level at worse.

To their credit, the players carried on in the second half from where they left off in the first and just 5 minutes in, Wyllie took his chance after a lovely passing move. W&F sat back, trying to hit us on the break but we got the equaliser after another really good move, Sam Youngs sliding home with about 10 minutes to go - and no more than we deserved.

Wyllie almost won it for us at the death but their GK made a good save low down by the post.

Plenty of positives to take from this performance.

Last comment - I thought today’s referee had an excellent game. Hope to see him again. He was clear, decisive, let the game flow and used the yellow card sensibly.
