My point is ,that i do not feel i should be keeping a constant lookout for speed signs saying 40mph and yellow cameras,

Why on earth not? You should be constantly looking out for all sorts of hazards, warning signs and whatever. It should be second nature so that you're not aware that you're doing it. If you're doing that you'll see the cameras and the speed limit signs without any extra effort on your part. If you're not doing that you're not fit to be on the roads.

Tom.Would you find it slightly patronising,if i lectured you on how you should (or shouldn't) use public transport. As you have much more knowledge on the workings of the sytsem and how to make it better...etc.

I find it slightly patronisng when non-car users think they know best regarding car and road travel.
Did anyone see in the news last week, when a motoring group decided on direct action ,and got scores of members to drive along at a constant 70 mph on a busy motorway for 4 hours (M1 i think) making sure the trafffic never broke the speed limit.Just to show the government how out of date the regulation is.suprise suprise. With 1/2 an hour, they had 5 miles of tailbacks behind them.

Also Tom,Looking out for speed cameras, and the subsiquent braking movement in order to be under the limit by the time a driver reaches the camera,is well known to cause many accidents. That why they are banned on motorways.

Were these drivers using all three lanes, or just the inside lane (As they obviously weren't overtaking)?.

1. If you re-read my previous posts you'll see that I am not a 'non-car user'. I just don't own one. I passed my driving test 26 years ago and owned a car for many years until its MOT failure coincided with a period of unemployment after which I decided I didn't need to replace it. I do still drive from time to time and I still travel as a passenger, both of which give me keep me up to speed (pun very much intended!) on road safety issues.

2. Braking for speed cameras causes accidents? Only if you, and the person behind you are going excessively fast in the first place.

But if you're traveling at 50mph on a dual carridgeway, you are not going to fast (in fact your are 10mph under the national dual carridgeway speed limit.Suddenly you see a random 40mph sign.WHoo, better brake to be under 40mph,there's a camera there.

So what's the problem?. If you're stuck at a Red light & nothings coming the other way do you jump the light then?.

But if you're driving with 'due care and attention' you don't 'suddenly' see it. And despite what you seem to think speed limits are not 'random' they're there for a safety-related reason.

The more you go on the more you prove my original point about thinking you can ignore the law with impunity. Keep going, I'm enjoying this

They can in the States apparently if you are turning left.

Right, actually, but I know what you mean. I think it's only some states, and some parts of Canada, which must cause a certain amount of confusion.

There is no national dual carriage speed limit. there is a national speed limit of 70mph on a dual carriage way unless other restrictions are on place and a national speed limit of 60 mph on a single carriage was unless there are other restrictions in place.

I've got a feeling that Tom's a Guardian reader.

Wrong again. Independent, actually. You strike me as a Sun reader who watches that 'Men and Motors' channel or whatever it's called

What exactly has that got to do with things?.
Do you only obey the laws that suit you?.
Oh yes, before you ask I don't read the Guardian, Independent or Sun.
