According to an email written by Brian and sent out by the club, the friendly against Charlton on August the 8th is the designated game for the Stonebridge Road centenary celebrations.

So it will be the Charlton first team then?

I wouldn't bet on it, since the fixture is advertised as being against a 'Charlton XI', and isn't even listed on the 'First Team Fixtures' page of their official site.

That said, you never know - this announcement may mean the arrangements have changed.

Why, do you think they will play with 10 or 12?

Has it just been announced that it's a centenary game?

I thought this was common knowledge as Brian said it in a half-time interview on the radio at an away game last season. He said he was going to sort something out with Charlton as it's their centenary aswell.

Yes, but I was under the impression that the original intention was that a game that was independent of the pre-season programme would be arranged for this purpose.

The Centenary occurs in September and that was when I assumed the game would take place. However it did seem odd that we would be playing Charlton twice in a month. There cannot be many football grounds still in use that have seen a hundred years of football and such an event deserves to be marked as appropriately as possible. Whereas we may consider that this is deserving of a strong side being put out by a Premiership side, our visitors may consider otherwise. A Charlton Athletic XI sounds very much like a youth and reserves team which seems to be about the norm when we have played a top side in the recent past. Hopefully it will be a better team than expected.

I wonder whether CAFC are aware of the significance of this game? Do they know that it is the designated game to mark 100 years of football at Stonebridge Road? Can they be persuaded to send a strong side including first team players? If they can will it then be advertised sufficiently?

If Brian is serious about making this game against Charlton a success and a proper opportunity for us to celebrate Stonebridge Road's 100th year he's got some work to do. He needs to ensure that Charlton send us a strong team, he needs to let the public know that Charlton will be sending a strong side, and he needs to give the game as much publicity as he can. Otherwise I'm afraid it will be a poor game with poor atmosphere and no more than 1200 through the gates. Of course re-opening the plough end for this game would be a great way to mark the occassion but we all know that's not going to happen now.

As many as 1,200 paying fans seems a rather ambitious number seeing as there were only 408 at the Colchester game. However, if Charlton were to send a strong side and this was made known we should attract local CAFC fans to help swell the attendance. On the otherhand Slarti could be spot on!
