Charlton friendly... still negotiating

Which, we could be forgiven for thinking, should have given us some sort of priority in pre-season friendlies with Charlton. Instead we seem to only be getting this because their tour to South Africa has been cancelled. If it takes place I hope they can arrange a strong team and that we also have enough time to advertise it to try and tempt Gravesham's couch potatoes to venture out of doors. If both come to fruition then the Club officials deserve a pat on the back.

Why all the fuss about bloody Charlton, in the old days we used to play Arsenal, Tottenham, West Ham etc etc every close season !

I don't think the "couch potatoes" will leave their homes just to see 1 or 2 "out of favour" Charlton first teamers and a load of kids like last year at Full Price.

Why congratulate or pat anyone on the back for Charlton.

And, do we know th Charlton reserve deal is good for us ? Has anyone seen any figures of what its worth ?

No, but, hey, let's just assume it's sh!t, shall we? That'll keep you happy, or an approximation of what passes for happy in Riverview.

I am purely making the point that nothing in the past few years that has been done has improved our club or its financial standing has it, so why assume this Charlton reserve thing will ?

Lower league position than the season before, lower attendances by a mile, stadium falling down around us, not allowed to use Northfleet end etc etc

Just be careful, that's all I'm saying, don't always believe the spin doctors, ask to see some Accounts and make your own mind up (if indeed you have your own mind ?).

Chris

I am not moaning, I'm just adding a level of common sense to a forum which should be supplied with a rose tinted screen shield so we can all see success round every corner.

Wake man, the reason why everybody kept away in droves last season was because the team performed badly and the football was [****!!****] to watch. We went backwards big time - its a fact

I have a good number of mates who are what we would all call the "casual supporters" and none of them came last season after seeing the rubbish being served up by LD and his coaching crew.

These are the guys who push the gates up towards 2,000 + not me and you. We are the loyal ones who cheer the team on every week win or lose - this is an open forum and I am always honest.

Its reality mate !

Oh let's trot out that old chestnut, the mythical rose-tinted specs. Just because people disagree with your continual moaning/honesty/plain speaking/utter horsesh!t (delete as applicable) does not mean they are pandering to the club's agenda or are too plain dim to understand the situation that seemingly only you, WVN and a few other crackpots/geniuses (again, delete as applicable) seem to be capable of grasping.

It amazes me that you think this club is doomed under the present management, while forgetting how bad things were under various managers in the 70s and 80s, and then McCluskey and Weller.

Your history book seems a bit different to mine, maybe its the one that has been re-written by the current rose tinted brigade.

I seem to remember the 80's as time when were saved from extinction and then went on to have a good push for the Southern Premier Title when it was tough league and that was under Tony Burns.

We later moved to a much "softer" Ryman League (good move, I might add) and got promotion to the Confernece thanks to a reasonable side and Canvey's constant promotion suicide !

In the 90's under Weller we played our biggest ever game against Villa which everyone I know rates as their best ever Fleet memory.

Although we are playing at as high a level as at any time in the past, who could failed to be unimpressed by what they saw last year.

To me, that was one of the most listless, depressing seasons I can remember.

Other years we have been tripe, but we had crap teams & no money then.

Last year we had a good squad, solid fanbase (to start) & good sponsorship.

LD HAS to get it right this season.

Quite brilliant ( or sh*t as the case maybe )

Pleased to see that the old pre season optomism is alive and well !!

In the old days ( yes RR I am getting on a bit too !!) at least people used to wait until the team ( whichever team you follow ) had lost a few games before twisting the knife !!

Nice to see that you have already screwed the lid down on the proverbial coffin.

You must be the "life & soul' at Christmas !!

Tell you what....if we have 2 points from 8 games, and are cast adrift at the bottom of the table, I will gladly by you a beer or 5, despite being unemployed, ( cue pass the hat round time !!), and our path's will never cross again.....( walks away into the sunset...or is it the chimney smoke ?!)

Regards,

Riverview Red - From the statements above complementing our "wonderful" successes during the late 80's and 90's can we assume that you are Lionel Ball (Minor)a former Director and son of the then Chairman Lionel Ball(Major).

Mine isn't quite so selective or revisionist.

I also recall the 80s as being when we were relegated from the top flight of non-league football and then relegated again with a woeful side from the Southern Premier to fall into the Southern Division.

That one cup run aside, and let's not pretend it was down to Mr Motivator CHris Weller, nearly saw us relegated in a league season that was downright pants. The appointment of Weller was one of the most unambitious moves this club ever performed and made Liam Daish's appointment look like the second coming of Christ.

Why let the truth get in the way of a good old fashioned rant, eh, Hirsty?
My only comment for the forthcoming season has been restricted to the following:

"Whilst I agree that the result from this particular match was of no real importance, what is crucial is that LD must formalate his best 16 - 18 players (which still allows him to sign 4/5 additional players if/when they become available all within the next 2 or 3 friendlies.
This will allow them to familiarise with each other and develop some proper team play in the final couple of matches before the serious league business starts.

No doubt I will be slagged off for having such negative thoughts already, but my hopes and expectations of pre season games are that 2/3 are for trialling, the remainder are to get the first team fit, bonded and playing to a pattern they are familiar with."

Hardly the most controversial posting made on this forum, yet you still continue with your endless criticisms.

The posting to which you referred was relating to LAST season, which even the most arden supporter would admit was "dissapointing".

Moi ? Ranting ? I think not my lord.

As the great FF said, when he was just plain SD......this is a forum for disussion......so, I am just adding my comments to your comments. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, it's just that mine and yours seldom agree. But there you go....let's enjoy it while we can a ? who knows how long we can continue to enjoy the limited freedom of speech that we have nowadays !

You be as negative as you like me ol' son, but don't get the right raging if I dare to disagree.

Cheers,

The fact of the matter is, when had our biggest 'underachieving'season ever last year. Yes we've been relegated before and had terrible seasons with some terrible managers and players but last season was our chance to shine and we blew it. We had our biggest budget ever used by a manger at this club and a solid fan base, which we failed to capatilise on.

All that has gone now and so have our chances of progressing for a number of years.

Two relegations and one promotion out of the Southern League Southern Division (as runners up) Not quite the rosy picture you paint is it?
