Referees/Assistant Referees

Recommended Posts

Obviously I didn't want to resurrect a thread from twelve years ago (see below) and can't anyway as it is closed but it includes the rant of the decade from a certain Assistant Referee who posts on here, thankfully he has lightened up a bit since then. I thought it was time we had a thread on Referees and their trusted Assistants particularly in the light of the SSML currently looking for an Appointments Officer for Division One and Two who will work hand in hand with Premier Division Appointments Officer Peter Clayton, applications close on Wednesday 3 June:

I am just wondering whether the trademark way in which a certain Assistant Referee who posts on here runs the line, with his flag constantly outstretched as shown in the goal kick and 2b illustrations below, could sometimes be misinterpreted or misconstrued by the Referee and players alike during a match, I'm quite surprised this hasn't been pointed out to him before:

Who is this Official you speak of?

That's fifteen posts and counting. Don't worry, he will soon come on here to defend himself, in his famous rant he said that he can take banter like anybody else, has a high tolerance level and respects people’s right to free speech and to voice their opinions but I don't believe that is the case.

No, I think that is going a bit too far, he is actually a decent and very well liked chap, I've known him for a good number of years and Officiating is his life, it's all he knows

Yes, he's harmless, he just takes himself way too seriously at times, such as his rant on another thread, and should lighten up a bit especially as he claims that he can take banter like anybody else.

I remember Karen posting this article a while back, following a survey of Referees, and it was shocking to read:

To be fair I would never want to be a Referee it's a bloody tough job.

I was forced ? to Referee a Under 9s game last season and even at that level it was a tough job to do.

If I'm honest I don't understand why people want to be a Referee ?

Many of you will know SSML match Official Jeff Aldous who retired this week from Refereeing after sixteen seasons although he will continue as a Specialist Assistant Referee. Jeff cut his teeth in the Chiltern Youth League and Bedfordshire County League before moving on to the SSML where he remained for many years, his first senior appointment was a game at Caldecote in the Bedfordshire County League and of course he issued a red card that day, he could be a bit 'card happy' at times, and it's a great photo of him below, but overall an excellent Official and very nice chap, he will be missed:

Savagebee - The face of the guy in the blue tee shirt is an absolute picture isn't it and he's looking at Jeff in total disdain, as you said before, who would want to be a Referee when you can generate so much hatred against you.

A bit after the Lord Mayor's Show but nice photographs from the 2015 Middlesex Referees Association Presentation event held at AFC Hayes on Friday 24 April 2015, there are one or two familiar faces:

He hasn't retired! He's become a Specialist Assistant Referee

Once a referee is promoted off of the Spartan League, (s)he becomes a referee on the Isthmian and Southern Leagues and an Assistant Referee on National South.

They could be then promoted as a referee (to National South) or assistant referee (to National Premier).

At the end of the 3rd season of being promoted, they have to decide whether to continue as a Referee or an Assistant Referee. Some people prefer/are better at Refereeing and like wise for AR. Jeff prefers to be an AR.

Past Spartan official Alan Cresswell has just been promoted to National League AR. I can't remember if it is 2 or 3 years since he left the Spartan. He will need to make a choice soon as to whether he stays as a referee on the Isthmian (and need 3 promotions to become a Football League referee), or become a Specialist Assistant Referee (being one step from becoming a Football League AR)

There are different skill sets for both. Philip Sharp (Herts RDO) was an ordinary referee, and was the first to admit it, but as an AR he was the best in the world which was shown when he was AR to Collina in the 2002 World Cup Final!
