Bovril is now Bovmite

Recommended Posts

Just an oddity from our childhoods but one which has made me irrationally cross!

I finished a jar of Bovril on Saturday and get the new jar down to put a smear on my toast. Yuk! Marmite - they have got the jars mixed up!

The Better Half, who is a Marmite connoisseur sniffed the jar and pronounced "It's Marmite"! A quick examination of the label revealed a subtle change between old and new in tiny lettering, from "Beef Extract" to "Savoury Yeast Extract".

However a check with the Internet revealed that the new owners, Unilever Bestfoods (There's a laugh!), have taken the Beef out and put Yeast in - i.e, it's now Marmite or Bovmite as it could be called.

I have been conducting a test and 100% of those given the jar to sniff testified it was Marmite. 100% of those who were tested blind between Marmite and "Bovmite" were unable to tell the difference. 100% of these tested blind with the old Bovril jar and the Bovmite jar were able to identify immediately which was which.

An email to complain got the usual Marketing Sh*t about consumer testing and that the veggies view is the one that matters. Why - I'm not against veggies, but they already had Marmite, so its obviously Bullsh*t, oops, sorry - Yeastsh*t.

Don't buy from them - Con Artists!!

I have not been able to find an alternative yet so any suggestions welcome.

Rant over!

Only Sainsburys have half decent own brands

Tesco is far to chavy

Sommerfeild and Asda's are for mothers and grandmas

Waitrose are for people who think they are more important than they are

Sainsburys are for people with more money than sense!

CO-OP- Never been to a Supermarket version but the 'local' one's are not bad for an oversized newsagents

Safeway used to market two "own brand" lemonades - the cheap sh@t was just that, but their "Select" range provided the most acceptable diet lemonade I have ever tasted. (and being diabetic, that is very important !)

Sadly, now that Morrisons has taken over, all the old Safeway brands are now defunct and have been replaced by Morrisons' own brands - which are decidedly inferior.

In fact, the whole supermarket has seemingly downgraded since the take-over - much less selection and much lower quality produce.

Anyone else comment about the take-over of their local Safeway ?
