HE was a STRIKER

Recommended Posts

Gary Abbott insists he would love to stay with Ryman League Premier Division club Braintree Town, but believes he may have to quit Cressing Road.

The assistant/player-manager has been offered a non-playing role next season on reduced terms.

But Abbott (pictured), 40, insists he can still do a job on the pitch and does not want to hang up his boots yet.

He scored some important goals last season, but was dogged by injuries and did not play as much as he would have liked.

However, the Kent-based striker said: "I still believe I can do a job on the pitch and I feel no different to what I did four or five years ago.

"But they're offering me only half of what I was on last season and I can't afford to take a cut like that.

"I'm doing a 180-mile round trip every time I come to Braintree and it costs me a lot in petrol. I'm going to have to talk to George Borg to see if we can come to some sort of arrangement."

He added: "I don't want to leave Braintree. I've really enjoyed my time there and believe we're going to do well again next season."

Wouldn't it be nice if we could get Abbo to do a job for us up front for the next two seasons.

I reckon Jim should ring him, just to get an idea of the sort of 'expenses' he would be looking for next season. With EFC signing a recognised striker next season.I think Town also need someone who can get 20+ goals a season.

Just think, Green and Nyman on the wings,Smith and Abbo up front.

but he is now nearly as old as Happy!

Did you see him play???

One of the only players to have two successful spells at Enfield, and like teddy Sheringham, never had any pace to lose. The most natural finisher in Non league football for the last 20 years.Don't forget old man grazioli scored 29 confernce goals for Barnet last season, and Abbo was better at Enfield than he was.
I remember when Abbo scored six goals in an Engalnd semi-pro international (all with his head).

PS.Who saw another ex-E Mark Bentley playiing for Southend yesterday and winning the second divison play-off.?

Abbo was class at EFC, only he knows if he has still got what it takes?

The thing about Abbo is that I think he may still have family in Enfield. We met them at the town show 2 years ago!

Last years Braintree reject Jamie Richards did well for EFC so Abbo certainly could be of service. Money may well be the sticking point. But nice to dream! I expect EFC with all their new found money could fund him!

Some of my earliest memories of supporting Slough in 1997 were of Gary Abbott scoring goals. You're right about the lack of pace, but found the net regularly alongside Mark West and Lloyd Owusu.

EFC had him in his prime.Maybe he didn't have the passion to play for you boys.

I've a feeling you may see a lot worse next season.
