I am a fully paid-up member of the Apostrophe Appreciation Society and am irritated when it is misused - so I am annoyed with myself for this error. It will be corrected pronto.

Mind you, an apostrophe is not only used to denote possession but also to show where letters have been omitted (don't, can't etc.) so if you truncate 'versus' and omit the 'ersu' counldn't it become v's? Anyway, I have changed the poster and used the full 'versus' now.

Both are correct - an apostrophe denotes that a letter or letters has / have been omitted from a word, or in some cases from two or more words linked together by the apostrophe.

 

Versus is the correct spelling, so v's is acceptable, as the apostrophe denotes the missing letters. However vs is also acceptable as this is the usual way it is written and hence has been accepted into the English language by common usage.

Oooh, cheers Dagsy! I love talking grammar! We were taught grammar in our foreign language classes - essential for learning another language (especially German!)

 

They didn't seem to worry about it in the English classes.
