HORNCHURCH 4 COLCHESTER UTD 3

Hornchurch made three changes from the team that lost to Havant on Saturday, Martin Tuohy, Ronnie Fletcher and Joey May all coming in to the starting line up.

Colchester fielded a strong team, and included several players from the first team squad plus George Porter, newly signed on loan from Reading.

Hornchurch started strongly, Ronnie Fletcher moving into a shooting position, but hitting his shot too high and over the bar.

Frankie Curley combined with Lewis Smith to open up the defence with a pass inside to Elliot Styles, and his first time shot from outside the area was well saved by Carl Pentney.

Hornchurch continued their impressive start when Tambeson Eyong was brought down, and Andy Tomlinson sent the free kick over to Joey May, who fired narrowly over the bar.

Colchester threatened on the left with a good pass from Ben Coker which came to nothing as Fletcher headed clear.

Hornchurch went ahead on 15 minutes when Eyong was fouled in full flight. Tomlinson took the free kick, and Lewis Smith took up the running, leaving defenders trailing before crossing into the goalmouth for MARTIN TUOHY to calmly clot home.

And it was almost two when May tried a first time shot from long range, which was saved by an alert Pentney.

Colchester drew level on 17 minutes when Coker swung the ball deep towards the far post, and it was headed back for ALEX GILBEY to finish with a well-directed shot.

Colchester looked confident when they came forward, but lost the dangerous Jack Compton, who went off with an injury and was replaced by Jack Simmons, who was to prove equally effective.

With both defences on top, neither side created a clear scoring opportunity until five minutes before the interval, when Eyong, playing at right back, moved forward and sent Lewis Smith away on one of his trade mark runs. Lewis was brought down just inside the area, and MARTIN TUOHY stepped up to take the penalty. Pentney dived to his right to save, but was left helpless when Tuohy reacted quickly to follow up and score.

Colchester started the second half powerfully, winning a corner, which was over-hit but promptly sent back into the goalmouth, where the ball eventually went out for a goal kick.

When Colchester won a free kick just outside the area, Joe Woolley made a good save from Ben Coker.

Colchester struggled to find a way through, and Simmons switched wings with Porter, and Thomas Lapslie coming on for Gilbey.

Hornchurch could have increased their lead when Lewis Smith, who time and again ran through the visiting defence, sent an inch perfect pass to Martin Tuohy, who ran forward, only for Pentney to make an excellent save to deny Tuohy his hat trick.

Hornchurch lost Elliot Styles who was stretchered off with a collar bone injury and an ambulance was called. Simon Glover came on in Elliot’s place.

And with Hornchurch unsettled temporarily in defence, FREDDIE LADAPO came in from the left to level the score.

On Saturday Wayne Gray had scored just 24 seconds after Havant had found the net. Tonight it happened again. This time it was ANDY TOMLINSON, who ran on to a defence splitting pass from Lewis Smith, to crash the ball home past Pentney.

And MARTIN TUOHY then scored the best goal of the match, racing through to leave defenders trailing, before hammering the ball home.

James Love replaced Joey May and Wayne Gray came on for Lewis Smith.

Colchester pulled a goal back, four minutes from time, with what appeared to be an own goal, and the visitors pitched everyone forward in a bid to force the equalizer.

The best they could achieve was a series of crosses, which Woolley had no difficulty in fielding, and two headers which went comfortably wide of the goal.

This report is taken verbatim from the excellent Colchester Utd web site. I hope everyone will agree that it summarises the match perfectly.

Seven goal thriller against Hornchurch.

The U's bowed out of the Essex Senior Cup at the quarter final stage on Tuesday night, in a seven goal thriller against AFC Hornchurch.

The home side led 1-0, 2-1 and 4-2 during the game and, although the U's fought back to level twice, they weren't able to do it for a third time as the U's went out in a game full of incident.

Two first half strikes from Martin Tuohy either side of a goal from Alex Gilbey saw the non-league side take a 2-1 lead into the break.

Freddie Ladapo levelled the tie with 15 minutes left to play, before a well taken goal from Andy Tomlinson and a third from the excellent

Tuohy saw Hornchurch race into a 4-2 lead.

The U's pulled one back late on through an own goal from Reiss Noel but it proved to be too little too late against a well organised AFC

Hornchurch side.

Despite the result, this will no doubt have been a useful workout against a physical side for the young U's as many of them look to

force their way into Joe Dunne's first team plans over the coming weeks.

The U's could have broken the deadlock as early as the second minute when George Porter scampered down the right before picking out Andy Bond in the box whose goal bound effort was blocked by Urchins defender Elliot Styles.

Styles was then involved at the other end as he stung the palms of U's 'keeper Carl Pentney with a powerful effort from 20 yards.

Freddie Ladapo had a great chance to open the scoring on the 10 minute mark when he was picked out by a dinked cross from Bond, but the young striker could only head tamely at Hornchurch 'keeper Joe Woolley from close range.

The home side took the lead on the quarter hour mark when Lewis Smith found space down the right hand side before laying the ball across the box to Tuohy who made no mistake as he side-footed home.

Colchester were level three minutes later though through Gilbey, as he finished well from close range after Ben Coker’s left wing cross was nodded back across goal by Tosin Olufemi.

There was an enforced change for the U’s following the goal as loanee Jack Compton was forced to withdraw through injury and was replaced by Jack Simmons.

Hornchurch restored their lead five minutes before the break. Smith was tripped in the box by Matt Heath with referee Barry Holderness

having no option but to point to the spot.

Tuohy stepped up to take the kick and although Pentney did well to save the original effort, the striker followed up to tuck home the rebound.

The U’s began the second half on the front foot and only a great challenge from Noel stopped Ladapo running clear just 90 seconds after the restart.

Heath then came within inches of levelling the tie on 53 minutes when he volleyed just over the bar following a cross from Bond.

Tuohy was still causing problems for the U’s at the other end though, and Pentney saved bravely at the frontman’s feet as he ran clear

following good work from strike partner Smith.

The visitors levelled the match on 75 minutes when Porter embarked on a jinking run before picking out Ladapo on the edge of the box, with the youngster taking a touch before finishing smartly into the far corner.

The game was level for just one minute though, with Smith finding Tomlinson on the edge of the U’s penalty area who drilled the ball

across the box and into the far corner.

Three minutes later and it was 4-2. Tuohy picked up the ball on the edge of the box where he was able to skip past two defenders before slotting the ball underneath Pentney, much to the delight of the vociferous home fans.

Colchester raised the tempo in the remaining ten minutes as they looked to rescue the game, and Woolley did well to tip over a header

from substitute Tom Lapslie.

They did manage to reduce the arrears with five minutes left to play when Simmons’s cross was turned past his own ‘keeper by Noel, but it wasn’t enough for the U’s who despite finishing the stronger of the two sides, were unable to find a way past a well organised Hornchurch rearguard.

U’s: Pentney, Olufemi, Roast, Sanderson (Bonne 77), Coker, Heath ©, Compton (Simmons 21), Gilbey (Lapslie 62), Porter, Bond, Ladapo.

southend cup replay is on the tuesday we have quite a big squad this season so the likes of freddy eastwood neil harris etc would be unlikely to play in the fa cup so will have more than enough to take a strong team to waltham abbey on the wednesday although they have serious trouble at waltham abbey with waterlogging and more rain on the way over the weekend might make it another cancelled game anyway

Whoever we get,we must support the game in numbers.

If we get drawn at home, whoever it is against, the match must be properly advertised in and away from the club.

If we get drawn away,we must try to get as many as possible to the away match and be as vocal as possible, especially if its somewhere like Concord.

I think this club needs to get to the Final of this competition, for the exposure it will get in the local press.

When we beat wakering in the final, reports were of between 1000-1500 urchins in the ground that night, the attendance was around 2000 and wakering had a few hundred.
